Does anyone know of any free programs which can be used to create music from scratch (not using samples). I used to use proppelerhead reason on my mates computer but he's moved away now and i want to have a play on my comp.

Yea im sure you used to have to...unless you can download it and find a keygen for it. Which is what i used to do.

or. you could just buy a home studio and record it all that way?

dont like downloading programs via torrents etc as have had bad experience in the past. have used an older version of fruity loops and was impressed. however was after some completely free (legally) software.
