New Physio appointed - John Gowens returns!

Hampshire Shrimp

First XI🦐
We are delighted to welcome John Gowens back to the club as Head of Medical.

John previously spent nine and a half years at Blues before he left to join Dagenham & Redbridge, where he has been physiotherapist for the last 18 years. He recently joined Heybridge Swifts as Assistant Manager but departs to take up the role in Blues' medical department.

Upon his return, he said: "It was something that I didn’t see coming. Over a year ago I stepped away from the medical side of things with a view to going into a coaching environment.

"I was approached by Southend towards the end of pre-season about coming here. Tom [Lawrence] and Kev [Kevin Maher] told me what their plans were for the future and it’s something that really excited me. I felt it was something I can really get my teeth into.

"I know Kev, I know Darren [Currie] and I know John [Still] and how they like to work. It took a while to get it over the line but I’m really happy to be here."

John added: "This is my second spell at Southend and it’s a case of getting things done, getting things organised and moving forward.

"It’s a busy treatment room at the moment but you’ll have that at times throughout the season, most teams have got lots of injuries and it’s about getting them back as quickly and as safely as possible so the Head Coach and his staff have selection problems."

Head Coach Kevin Maher added: "I'm delighted to bring John's experience and knowledge to the club to get hold of that department and lead it.

"He will add a lot of discipline to that area of the club. It’s a massively important role and one we’ve needed filling, and I think he’s the right person for it."

Welcome back, John!

Disappointed in all honesty.

Was at least expecting a corner flag or John holding a Southend scarf. Instead looks like John is checking his watch for a bus)

Only Joking Another great appointment with a a lot of knowledge and topped off by previously working at the club. Least he's not going to be twiddling his thumbs waiting for any injuries

Good to see Johhny Gowens back

Back in the day ( I believe when Ronnie Whelan was our manager )

John told me off for smoking in the Swan Pub in Wickford , telling me to pack it in its bad for you ...lol

I liked him

I believe he came a postman after losing his Southend Job

John gowens said he spoke to Tom lawrence & Kevin Maher and the future excited him ? So maybe they could fill us supporters on the future and excitement, chairman Ron has been exciting new people to the club for years and still nothing, the training ground will be finished in October but still no stadium start date published.

Oh dear, we had to get shot of him after numerous blunders leading to one player taking legal action against him. He was shifted out to various coaching roles whilst his contract was run down. He once made a player with a broken leg hop on it and also sent a player with a broken arm back on the field despite the players protests. His archaic methods will be a hinderance too you, he’s past it unfortunately. Good luck.

Oh crawl back under your rock you’ve got enough problems of your own… we know what his like he was here for ten years!! 💪🏻

Really pleased with John returning. He knows the club and the management team and will be a great addition to our Roots Hall family.......again.

Welcome back John.

I think members of WEHTOJH (What Ever Happened To Julian Hails) would like to interview Mr John "Healing Hands" Gowens. 🤨🤨 Last heard of 20+ years ago with a slight knock that would "keep him out for the game at the weekend" Julian was never to be seen again. Rumours about sales of various "unfit" player body parts in a Burke & Hare scenario at the time were never proven but the cover story of Julian since retiring being a Maths teacher at Haberdashers' Aske's is patently false. Maths FFS, I mean when have you ever seen a footballer who could count to 10 for the yards for a freekick wall & as for 9.15 metres well just forget that. I rest my case!

As for the lopsided lump that was Graeme Jones, it took the John & The Medics at the time a year to work out he had one leg shorter than the other. No wonder he nearly hit me with a shanked penalty at Rubbish & Dustbins. Also I was in the frigging car park!! 🤣🤣 Oh how I enjoyed my arguments with Scriv about Jones' merits, or lack of. 🤐

Having said all that JG was the 1st to sprint to try to treat Mike North back on that fateful day 21 years ago. Something I'm sure he never would expect to have to do & I never expected to see. All credit for his efforts.

Hopefully unlike Jinky Julian we'll see Caldwell & Arnold again!! Or will we..............😰😰

Welcome back.

Hey John, will you be returning with all your physio equipment you took when you left last time?

Why did John leave last time?

I'm not being accusing, genuinely can't remember.

I do seem to recall a lot of criticism aimed his way during his spell with us, hence the sarcastic 'Healing Hands' reference I definitely recall.
