New Speed Cameras and limit on A127

Wont affect me. I drive through that area in the rush hour so 50 would be a massive improvement.
Why are they doing it though? Its not exactly littered with accidents.

I see there are also plans to allow two lanes to turn left onto the London bound A127 from Basildon. Why? Surely people going that way would shoot through Cranes Farm Road. Most of that traffic jam is heading to Wickford or Southend.
Do the people who make these decisions ever go and watch the traffic or is it the result of some nursery school competition.

My bet is the speed limit has been reduced to improve traffic flow rates.

Increasing the speed limit along a stretch of road does not guarantee that the net flow of traffic increases and may actually have the opposite effect.

We have all come to a grinding halt on a motorway thinking there must be a massive accident ahead only to be back on the move at 70mph a minute later.

But does reducing it help then?

Traffic flow

I'm not an expert but I believe the reason we see the type of delays I metioned earlier on motorways is that although the speed limit is 70mph there is a variation in the actual speeds that people drive. Some will do 95, some will do 55.

If you are doing 95 the a car doing 55 is an obstacle that needs to be overtaken - if the road is busy you might not be able to overtake for a while so you have to brake which may cause cars behind you to also brake and can cause ripples in the traffic.

If you slow traffic down then I guess there is less of a distribution of speeds and therefore less braking so the flow of traffic behaves more like the flow of water through a hosepipe.

for me the problem is the traffic lights at progress road cause a back up, surey if you have 100 cars approaching it at 70 or 100 cars approaching it at 50 you are still going to have the same ammount of cars passing through and being held up for the same ammount of time, just takes more time to get there.

Hmmm, wrong toime to start seeing someone who lives in Laindon. Might have to shelve that one, I'm sure she's understand.

i.m.o. speed does not kill.
it is inapproprate speed that kills, i.e. going far too fast, or going far too slow.

Agreed. Add inappropriate speed for the conditions to that - people who belt along at 95 in slippery conditions for example, or thunder along narrow and twisty country lanes at 60.

Thing is though, if you're travelling along the 127 on an early morning or evening when the roads are clear, it's going to be completely ridiculous trying to keep to 50. It's a main arterial road - hence The Arterial - to have that speed limit for those areas(I'd thought it was only from the Weir up originally) is plain ridiculous.

Have it at 50 in the rush hour.. Back up to 70 for the rest of the time. Oh hang on not much extra revenue in that plan

And that's the issue isn't it? So all those workers travelling at unsociable hours currently enjoying a nice smooth quick journey to or from work are going to be affected because too many youngsters who invariably couldn't handle the speed of their cars have had accidents.

The dick turpin to the 40 mph limit is about 4.5 miles
At 70 that will take 3 minutes 51 sec
at 50 , 5 Minutes 24

1 and a half minutes on a good day is hardly going to make anyone late is it ?

It's the perception though isn't it, and the aggy, besides a lot of those hurtle along at 80+ on a clear road - not saying that's right, just perfectly obvious that they do.

I think you'll find a lot of the accidents are by people who shouldn't be on the road, whether it's no license, no insurance, no MOT or too drunk to drive legally. i'm not saying it is in all the cases but i know it was reported on a few of the deaths this was the case

I would imagine a few fines and penalty points might focus motorists minds on the speed limit.
