SUFC: The Future Next season

I think that most of what would be my suggestions on financially-realistic playing-squad improvements have been covered by some of the previous posters on this thread, so I'll not repeat them.

My big wish for next season is that the owners/chairpersons of every club in this awful National League will launch a concerted, united campaign to increase the number of promotion places to EFL League 2. It will be difficult because the EFL turkeys are not likely to vote for a National League Christmas.

Personally, I would get rid of the present over-long National League play-off lottery completely. We may feel sore about losing in the final but, if I was a York fan, having seen my team finish second after 46 games, then seeing a team that finished a country mile behind them promoted I would be angry beyond words.

Instead, my opening gambit in any negotiations would be automatic promotion for the teams finishing 1st and 2nd in the National League (and automatic relegation for the teams finishing 23rd and 24th in EFL League 2) plus a two-match (home and away) play-off involving the team finishing 3rd in the National League and the team finishing 22nd in EFL League 2, to give a third National League team the possibility of promotion. There are all sorts of other suggestions available but that would be my personal best compromise.

Whatever, we have to find a better way for good teams to get out of this maladministered National League.

Notwithstanding COSU's already stated medium- to long-term plans for the club which I believe are already in the public domain, I wonder if we'll see a statement from them outlining their feelings/opinions on how this season has gone and what they'll be planning (hoping ?) for come the start of the new season ?

I don’t think we need the radical changes some might think. We’ve got a really good squad, just a few good players away from being a force next season, providing no one leaves. But the very first thing I’d do if I were Kev is to get Ralph and Bridge on new deals, as both are up in the summer. Ralph is still an important player and has made the LCB spot his own and I think Bridge is a great squad player at this level and deserves a new deal, although I expect LCP to probably be more first choice at LWB next season. In terms of contracted players, that leaves us here:

So I think we need 5 signings in the summer. 2x central centre backs, 1x more attacking midfielder, 2x strikers (one of which is more of a target man). I think that’ll give us a really well balanced squad, with plenty of options in every position. Can’t see us signing a new keeper with Hayes and Collin both under contract (unless one leaves) and I don’t see us paying up anyone’s contract and allowing them to leave. The only player I’d consider in that regard is Walker. It just hasn’t really happened for him and I think new signings could push him further down the pecking order. Could be best for both of us if he moves on and we can get a new 5th striker in. If that happens, I’d consider triggering Bonne’s option. If it doesn’t, I wouldn’t. Which is a shame as I really like the guy but goals is where we’ve lacked this season and for all his good work, he doesn’t get them regularly enough.

The dream for me would be Golding, Goodliffe, Pepple, Matt Dennis and a midfielder similar in style to KAF. But I think that’s wishful thinking and then some!

The message was clear from Justin, Ian, Tom and Dave Kreyling last night.

We're naturally disappointed after yesterday, but it's the beginning not the end. We've come a long way and did brilliantly to get there, just missing out. But we will go again next season and the work has already started towards that. Keep believing and getting behind the boys.

Will this be our last season with Macron? Hopefully get better stock levels next season 😩
I'd just be happy to order a large and get a large rather than have to order an XXL just to get a large size.

I tried on some of my Nike kits and the medium was a little snug (to be expected after 15 or so years) but the large kits still fitted.

Hopefully they will have stock levels all lined up. Also hope that the logos are all printed o

Not Walker, Bonne or Hopper. Walker needs 10 chances to score 1 and the other 2 were pretty anonymous in an attacking sense.
We need an option with a player like Fondup who can hold the ball up.
A decent keeper is also a priority.
That'll do for starters
Agreed on all but the keeper. Keeping both, ho-ho, will do for the time being. Add Coker, btw. If I see one more floaty cross with a stamp on it. Grrr...

An attacker that means we can play through the middle and actually run at teams.
Yesterday the amount of times we had the counter attack on but slowed down so either bridge or Gus could overlap down the wing to cross really agitated me. But other than Kendall we have no one who can run at players through the heart of defence and get defenders scared.

Bonne, Hopper, Walker all could go to try and find that 30 goal a season striker were missing.
I’m hopeful this season business can be done early and we don’t end up with the scraps no one wants to just give us some legs on the pitch.

Not keen on Leon at LWB, think signing a proper LWB should be a priority, with Leon inside him at LCM.

I think Bridge had an extension triggered by number of appearances a couple of months ago.

We need a really decent goalkeeper and a proven goalscorer. I think with these additions we can make the current squad work far more effectively for a push next season.

I agree with this.
Nick made a great save from Fondup and I give him credit for Fondup's early narrowly missed chip as Hayes came out quickly forcing the striker to take it early. However, was at fault for the winning goal. Sadly how it is with keepers. You can make great saves, but the one mistake will be remembered.

We need a Corr/Caldwell type of forward- Oldham we're able to vary their attack by playing through and throwing crosses in, we don't have thar option as Hopper isn't very strong or mobile, Bonne has the finishing prowess of Che Wilson, Kendal is decent and Walker looks like he was a one season wonder at Daggers
