Maybe it is just me, but all I seem to see PB talking about is keeping the players from last year together. These are the same players that he could only motivate, or they were not good enough, to 1 win in the time he spend with them last season.

I don't get why when they finished 11th in a pretty weak league last season compared to the season before why he wants to keep most of them. They were also truly abysmal at home.

Am I missing something here?

No, I'm thinking the same which to me suggests that Brown doesn't know the players at this level. We also only seemed to be linked with players after they've been mentioned on here first (dawson, Fagan etc.)

Not a dig at Brown, just how I see it though...

Perhaps PB feels that the squad just needs a few newbies to achieve promotion and he has faith in most of the players from last year.

He's released some of the dead wood but the worry is that Clohessy, Cresswell and Tomlin will all go, which will be a massive blow to any promotion hopes. You need players who can play 40-50 games in a season (we were lucky with injuries last time we got promoted from this division). I dont see too many of them in the squad- Phillips, Barker, Corr, Eastwood, Harris, Leonard have all had plenty of injuries since theyve been here. You then end up patching the squad up with loanees which is not conducive to success.

We've already released 5 players that were here last season. He has also been quoted as looking at another 6 players (Fagan, Dawson, Grant, Howe, Lund and Reeves) and only 2 of them were here last season.

Maybe Brown knows he will only have a chance to sign a few players due to some certain transfer restrictions instead of releasing and selling the whole squad and then trying to find a whole new team.

I don't think the players were inherently poor last year after Christmas; I think many were injured, tired and playing while not fit. I think the lack of key persons in key positions showed. The awful week of 3 home games without Cressie (red carded) or Timlin (break) then bringing back the quickly red carded Bilel did for us. The central defence had gone and then the midfield disappeared without Laird, Timlin and Tam. I agree the bulk of the squad underperformed however the reasons why are IMO not because they are bad players.

Do you feel it is because they did not play as a team ?

11 names on a team sheet doesn't always make a team; a classic example was poor Spillane playing centre back alongside Tam (who did a good job there); Bilel in centre midfield? These guys are good at what they do but to be pushed into an unsure position, when those around you are often out of place and confidence too, had consequences that hindsight allows us to see clearly now.

Tbh the club want to keep the impression that we are looking at everyone however Brown has his own thoughts and targets and I'd be surprised if he offered up the information. All it does is alert other clubs so if I was him I would want as many smokescreens as possible.

Of the ones mentioned I think the one thats real is Grant as it appears we have been in contact with Stevenage (as he can leave and has a year to run its first a question of how minimal the fee can be. Then wages).

Otherwise I think we are going to be the last to know wherever possible

I really don't think that the squad was too bad last season, injuries and problems behind the scenes are what ruined Sturrock's chances.

I completely agree. I feel we have generally a very good squad for a team at this level, and what was needed was a couple in and a couple out. That's why I'm always surprised to see comments on here that argue we have crap players. I was equally surprised to see us bin Sturrock. I share concerns that PB is even more out of his depth at this level than he was in league 1 with Preston.

I dont think PB is a mug , he will be assessing league 2 and making decisions on what sort of players we need to achieve promotion, i said before i dont think it will be next season , i think the following season is when we can expect things to happen, for PB i think this coming season is a consolidation season, when he will be putting the pieces of the jigsaw together. Give him time boys. I just want to hear you all saying Southend are playing some decent football at long last, and Roots Hall is once again becoming a fortress.

I agree with what you say but I'm concerned. The three players (Cresswell, Clohessy, Tomlin) who will leave are three of our best - the reason we finished so low last season IMHO is because of the general standard of the rest (plus the injury to Timlin). And when these three go that's what we'll be left with....the rest.

Worrying. :stunned:

yeh think you are right here, PB will aready have replacements lined up, its just if they are better players than we already have eh, if you get out of this division you need a 20 goal striker to even stand a chance.

No you don't, having a consistently solid defence gets you out of this league. Port Vale had Pope who scored over 30 goals in the league, yet they were 5 points behind the solid Gillingham, who conceded less than a goal a game.

I think the squad became far too comfortable under Luggy and then did not take to the new Brown regime.
Lets hope we can get it right immediately this coming season.

well the defence wont get the goals:smile:

Well we have a 20 goal striker ,2 in fact maybe 3 if both Harris and Freddy are fit and keen,Corr is the other.like to think PB is looking for defenders and midfielders at present
