Struggling for good omens with this one. Last time we played at Northampton we lost 4-0 and had a player sent off. Last time we had this referee we lost 5-0 and the match was over half way through the first half. We do however have the edge over Northampton, one of our more regular opponents, with 42 League wins to their 41 (28 draws).
As we look to stay just ahead, man in charge is one of the League's youngest officials, 24 year old Michael Salisbury from Penwortham (which, of course, is near Preston) who is in his second season as a League referee. He is the son of Graham Salisbury who has refereed Southend many times and who, on Saturday, will be fourth official at the Wolverhampton v Swansea Cup match.
Mr Salisbury jnr is the Training Manager for The Preston Referees Society.
He has refereed Southend just once before, this season at Rotherham, although he was on the line at Accrington for our 1-1 draw four seasons ago. The 5-0 defeat at Rotherham was an early warning that things might not be so great this season. A yellow for Cox and two for them.
His 22 matches thus far this season have produced just 52 yellow cards and 2 reds - well below average after a high first season.
Assistants will be poor non-league referee, Stuart Butler, from Maidstone and Marvyn Amphlett from Worcester. Joe Clark from Walsall stands by as Fourth Official.
