Northern Rock

I think there is little chance of that at the moment.

I work for a bank, and 'redundancy' is the latest buzz-word rather than headhunting. We're bracing ourselvses for no rises, and bonuses have been a media myth for a few years now.

We're all under immense pressure, work loads have gone through the roof from those colleagues who've lost their jobs, and the level of sicknotes resulting from stress is increasing.

Good luck to the staff at Northern Rock. They deserve it. If we've had it bad, they've had it worse. Small recompense for the idiots at executive and board level who have got everyone in this mess in the first place.

Same here... I work for an overseas bank in the city... Big Bonus are a media myth... sadly everyone who works outside the financial world think we all drive Ferraris …. Sadly we all drive 2003 Ford KAs…..

When all those pensioners stated a mad rush on Northern Rock to withdraw their thousands I felt for the staff… good luck to them

BTW did anyone buy Northern Rock shares last year ?

I know there was a thread saying to Fill your boots up cos the are the share price is falling ….

No, but you wouldn't be employed at all without the Government's money!

But surely the government money is our money, if the government did not take away 40% of my wages I would be happy not to have a 'big bonus'. Come on do people really think £2000 is a big bonus??

Remember they will still be taxed on this figure so the take home amount will be considerably less.

Are we not giving more and more people a bigger handout from the goverment by having them claim social security.

the fact that the fat cats arent getting the handout makes no difference. This is a payment that the taxpayer is not obliged to make! Who do the government think they are giving our money away like this? Times are tough, sure but these NR employees are lucky to have jobs and the fact that they are doing a good job turning it around should be neither here nor there. That should go without saying.
Nothing like looking at the bigger picture.

I suppose Police, Fire Service, Civil Servants and anyone else with a remote link to the Government should take a 50% pay cut too?

As you say the Governments money is our money, why should we give these people handouts for just doing their jobs? I'm getting no benefit from them doing their job, why should i contribute to any bonus?

As for them being taxed, so what? we get a 25% refund of our money?? These are the low paid remember and not the fat cats!

Also, why would we be giving them Social Security? They have jobs which we have already paid to secure!

All Civil Servants beit Police, Fire Service, MP's should be in the same boat. When times are hard as they are now, they should feel the pinch too. They certainly should not be exempt from having to tighten the purse strings. Where your 50% pay cut figure comes into the equation i don't know!

didnt i read that Northern Rock have already paid back half the amount the Governement lent them. Repossessions aside, that is good going for just over a year, so yes, maybe the staff do deserve something a little extra for all there hard work?

So you know the full details on this deal do you? So you know that the Government is not earning anything out of this deal?? I would rather contribute to someone who is doing their job well enough to deserve a bonus then someone who is sitting in a boozer all day on social handouts, at least the worker will contribute more back into the country's economy.

And you point is ? You are quibbling over £1500 if in the 25% bracket.

I suggest you read again or maybe this highlights why you are not getting a bonus this year!

I was merely raising the point that more people are becoming unemployed and thus taking more government money then the bonus pool for these workers.

You tend to find bonuses fall into two categories.

a. They are contractural. In which case they get paid regardless.

b. They are not really bonuses (ie an extra payment) but are part of the wage structure (ie, a pay rise).

The point is, these payments are being paid to the lowest paid, not the morons who screwed up in the first place and the total payment is miniscule in the scheme of things.

How much did the Government pump into propping up the banks this week?

I would rather us cut back on non obligatory bonuses to people that are paid a wage to do their job. I also think we should be doing more to get these lazy work shy people back into work, or earn their benefits.

YES, as it is the Tax Payer's money, i am. These £1500 net bonuses could help to keep a ward open at a hospital.

I am not getting a bonus because my whole company is not getting one (like a lot of companies i might add). We recognize that we are lucky to have jobs and if and when in the future we get bonuses they are treated as just that.

I was merely raising the point that more people are becoming unemployed and thus taking more government money then the bonus pool for these workers.
I was merely making the point that this bonus is a payment that the Government chose to pay and had no right to pay! If they hadn't paid it, these people would still have had jobs, the government bail out already secured that!

Well tomorrow I am going to write a rather large cheque to HMRC for the government to squander it on keeping greedy, reckless investing, downright negligent, fat cat bankers in a job.

Why have no heads rolled from the top or all these institutions - about time they we made Trustees and accountable for their reckless investment of public funds ????

Have no problem with paying the front line staff who had to take the flack from the public rushing to take out their cash quickly and the extra hours worked etc - it is not the soldier ants, but the king, queen and royal entourage that need their ar>>> kicked out.
