England unchanged, which means Ryan Sidebottom who has only ever taken a single wicket at the ground plays.

Darren Sammy makes his debut for the Windies, who appear to have opted for 5 bowlers. Sammy is listed at no.7. MtS what did his batting look like?
Chanderpaul returns for Sylvester Jospeh, and Fidel Edwards replaces Daren Powell. Trying to work out who was dropped for Sammy - ah, no-one, the skipper was unfit to play.

We're in and batting. 13 runs from 2 overs, nice start!

Asking for negative rep there as you talked out Andrew Strauss.

Strauss goes for 6. And four of those were from overthrows.

Strauss' position is definitely the most vulnerable amongst all the England batsmen now.

Having spent 3 days watching the Windies last weekend, I can confirm that Taylor is bowling pretty sweetly at the moment, but that Edwards will be smacked out of the attack within the next couple of overs... absolute gash; although he may clean up the tail.

Straussy, Straussy... oh dear.

Matt

whoops. bell. collingwood and prior can rescue this but there seems a bit in the pitch

Probably the best day of the series so far, a tospy turvy day. England probably on top just about. Our score can be judged better when both teams have batted, I wouldn't be surprised if we bowled them out for under 200.

Good to see Collymore take a couple of wickets, I like him purely because of his surname! Edwards bowled fast, he has a Malinga-esque bowling action. Hopefully we have a series on our hands at last

there is a lot in the pitch and to be honest about 350 is probably a decent score. england will definitely have been the happier going into the pavillion and i think the windies missed a trick when they had us 166-5

Predictions for today?

Tricky one to call, but I think England will get to around 350.

I think the ball will do a bit when England bowl, but am expecting an improved Windies batting display with at least one partnership to hold England up, and for the Windies to go onto post a competitive score, being something like 220-5 at close.

I too feel we can reach 350, maybe up to 370.

I expect us to get a few quick Windies wickets, and possibly have them 240-7 at close of play, probably dismissing them for around 280-290 an hour into tomorrow.

157-4 as Monty claims his 50th test wicket. My prediction is looking spookily accurate.

Not sure of the wisdom of bowling bouncers at Harmison.

Probably the stupidest thing I've ever seen in sport was when South Africa bounced Devon Malcolm, hitting him on the head. The normally amiable Devon wasn't best pleased and proceeded to take 9-57 in a rather rapid and hostile spell of quick bowling.

And arguably the best spell of fast bowling by an England bowler ever. The only ones that come anywhere near (IMO) are Bob Willis' 8-43(?) at Headingley in 1981, and Harmison's 7 for against the West Indies.

Hopefully the Beeb will put a clip of it up on the web-site as it is one of the greatest sights in all sport to see a fast bowler blow a team away.

I think there are probably a few other contenders further back in history as well. I think Fred Trueman got 8-32 or something against India, Frank Tyson had one Ashes when he was apparently awesome- I think Benaud rated one spell as the quickest he has ever seen, and someone like Larwood probably put in a spell against Bradman et al which is worthy of a mention but Devon Malcolm's 9-57 is definitely up there. In fact its right up there for fast bowlers of any country.

Trueman was I think 8/31 against India in 1952. I also remember Trueman taking 7 fer against the WIndies in 1963, when I was a nipper.
Tyson for pace, was indeed described by Richie Benaud as the fastest he had ever seen. Larwood by all accounts was seriously quick. I am told that another very quick bowler was Kenneth Farnes of Essex, who was a fighter pilot and killed in WWII.
