Old trafford test

Trueman was I think 8/31 against India in 1952. I also remember Trueman taking 7 fer against the WIndies in 1963, when I was a nipper.
Tyson for pace, was indeed described by Richie Benaud as the fastest he had ever seen. Larwood by all accounts was seriously quick. I am told that another very quick bowler was Kenneth Farnes of Essex, who was a fighter pilot and killed in WWII.

Cheers canveyshrimper. I hadn't heard of Farnes. He sounds a quality player. 690 wickets at 21.45 is some first class record. Quite a lengthy write-up by cricinfo/wisden he seemed to be particularly fond of Southend!

The batting record interests me. He got 8% of his runs in just the one innings of his total of 201 innings. Shame he couldn't get the three runs necessary - I guess he ran out of partners. That innings looks as unlikely as Phil Tufnell getting a 97*

Oh dear! Harmison has already chucked down 6 wides in his first over. His analyssi currently stands at 0.1-0-6-0

EDIT: Make that 7 wides and 4 byes, against the unfortunate Prior, for good measure: 0.3-0-7-0

FURTHER EDIT: He then gets Ganga LBW! Talk about loose radar bowling!

WIndies 17-1

Make that 7 wides, 4 byes and a wicket.

Plunkett into the attack and gets a wicket 3rd ball. Gayle, the waster, out. WI 49-2.

Sidebottom, still searching for his second wicket at Old Trafford in his 12th first class game at the ground, has just been hit for 10 that last over.

The danger of horses for courses selections is if they do well the selectors feel obliged to keep them in for the next test.

Predictions for today?

Tricky one to call, but I think England will get to around 350.

I think the ball will do a bit when England bowl, but am expecting an improved Windies batting display with at least one partnership to hold England up, and for the Windies to go onto post a competitive score, being something like 220-5 at close.

All I need now is a bit of bad light and I'll have been spot on.

WI 220-5.

Windies making a game of this!

Bumble has just come out with the stat that this match has had the second most extras in test history. Another day to go yet too! A real reflection of the quality of the bowling present. At least Harmy has looked more like his old self.

Monty can finish with an 8 for here. He removes the admirable Sammy for 25 and the WIndies death knells are chiming at 348/7 (risking neg rep in saying this :))
