For the penultimate refwatch of the season, the man in charge of this meaningless fixture is first year referee, Craig Pawson from Sheffield. It would be fair to say he hasn't set the world alight in his first year with a repution for incessant whistling amongst many other criticisms. Refereed Southend once before in the 2-2 draw at Tranmere when he sent off Laurent and one of theirs. He has refereed 22 matches, producing an average-ish 54 yellows and 3 reds. (So that's only one other red in the other 21 matches). Has a statistically improbable, high level of away wins; long may it continue (well for one game anyway). Don't expect too much from him and you probably wont be disappointed.

Refereed the Conference play-off final at Wembley.

Assisting will be Darren Handley from Lancashire, Glen Hart from Co. Durham with 4th official duties undertaken by Iain Siddall also from Lancashire.

Mick,
How can it be a meaningless fixture when King Kev might be playing?

And he gives a "contreversial" penalty...

Was bloody rubbish. As were the linesmen, wouldn't know the offside rule if it jumped up and biffed them on the head.

He gave some very soft yellow cards yesterday. Aside from the mysterious penalty (up the other end, didn't really see it but it seemed very soft and JR also admitted so), I didn't understand what Dervite or Macca's cards were for. Macca was a strong shoulder charge at worst and their guy was already off balance.

However the worst one was Clarke. Having just been fouled at the far post, he got up once he realise he was getting nothing out of the ref for it, turned round and started running back down the pitch, only to be prevented by a defender squaring up to him. By then now surrounded by players he had nowhere to go. So yellow card, obviously.

Only one challenge in the game worth a yellow in my book was when Grant was chased 50 yards down thepitch in the second half until he was brought down 35 yards out. Clear intent to take him out, cast iron yellow. But no, just a free kick.

I sometimes wonder if the FA have to ensure refs fail a common sense test before getting league appointments?

In all fairness, I did think Dervite's and Macca's were possibly justifiable. Really didn't get Clarke's, as you rightly say, he was the innocent party - and even after he'd been booked, another of their players squared up to him. Still don't understand how Dervite being upended and dumped on the floor was an advantage to them which resulted in the penalty.
