Great night, football when it was played by real men.....did we see any gloves on outfield players? leggings? snoods? No we did not!

All the way from Tenterden to Southend that evening along the awful old A13. In the Cricketers when it was snowing .....was it on was it off? On the the old very fluid South Bank that night. My wife's last experience of seeing the Blues, if there was ever a time when you took your life in your hands, it was that night. Perhaps it's just as well Parker didn't score, maybe we wouldn't be here to tell the story!

That "miss" was nowhere near as bad as you might remember H, i'll see if i can help jog your memory of it

Derrick Parker works (worked) for Radio Sheffield, we played Barnsley in (I think) the Championship season, he was in the Far Post Bar, I thought I recognised him and we got chatting. I said I had always wanted to kick him after that miss. His response was that he'd been kicking himself for over 25 years. I think it was Lee.

I was ten at the time. My older brother and his mate had tickets and I was so jealous, then, after a lunch time session in the Peter Boat my brother’s mate got nicked for drink driving and guess who got his ticket………………I have had a deep fondness for Essex Constabulary ever since.

Too right - how many people must have been on that huge South Bank terrace, probably half the crowd, around 15,000?
Frightening to think of it now

Loads of us got in for nothing, as they just opened the gates for free entry with five minutes to go to kick off.
Must have been another 500 more than the official gate.
