Just as with Northampton last week, matches against Plymouth in all competitions are tied, in this case at 24 wins apiece, from 69 games.

Our last two home games have been 0-0 (sorry to remind you), Plymouth's last away game was 0-0 and the referee's last game was 0-0. All points to a real goalfest!

The referee in question is a first year League referee making his first ever visit to Roots Hall, although he has run the line in a few away matches. He is Darren Handley from Bolton who has made it on to the League list after 6 years of Conference officiating. He is 37 and a PE teacher at Tottington High School.

His 15 matches this season have produced an above average 53 yellows and a well above average 5 reds. Including his trial match last season, his 16 matches have included 6 nil-nil draws !

He has refereed neither Southend nor Plymouth before.

His assistants are the incredibly short Matthew Buonassisi (nee McLaughlin) from Bedford and ginger-haired psychology teacher from Ipswich, Carl Fitch.

Fourth official is Sam Purkiss from Highbury who hit the headlines last season sending off 5 home players and abandoning the game in the Ryman League although there was no criticism of his performance in that match. He certainly had a reasonable game at Concord last Sunday.

Once, just once, I want to read that the ref is 100% a homer, and has been bribed so there's no chance of us losing!

Darren Handley is from Bolton and his name is an anagram of 'Phil Browns mate' (*) so what more do you want !

(*) that bit may have been a lie..............

Strictly speaking it should be "né", but not being bothered to "get" an accent at the time I thought I'd get away with nee.

Lol, I wasn't trying to be clever with the difference between "ne" and "nee" (with or without an accent!) just wondered how he'd changed his name!
