Racism & Stewarding

My teenage son was at the Blues v Sheffied Wednesday match today and heard racist chanting in the form of "monkey noises" coming from the visiting fans in the NW corner, these remarks were directed at JCR.

When he reported it to a steward he was told that it was not in his area so it was not up to him to deal with. When my son then asked if they could report the incident on his radio he was told that "these radios don't work to contact them over there".

I have since found out that the situation was being monitored during the second half but why could the steward not actually be seen to do something about it (and act like he was bothered) at the time it was reported to him. The club claims to want to stamp out racism, it is a pity that the steward in question could not give a toss.

The same steward in the second was involved in getting a fan banned from the next match for standing up on a regular basis during the day.

All this says is... Standing - banned, Racism - Not my problem.

What a t%$$&r that steward is!!

This whole business of not being able to stand at the football now is a total joke, and I for one will never stand for it. Why dont they just strap us to our seets, and put a blindfold and ear muffs on, that way they could take all kinds of emotion and fun out of the experience of going to watch live football!!

Anyway, that a different issue, as far as this steward not being willing to do anything about the rasicm is a joke. i dont agree with what you said about the club not wanting to stamp out rasicm, as I am sure he could have done something to get the issue sorted, just did not want to get off his lazy arse.

Did your son happen to clock the stewards steward number by any chance, I feel the club may be very interested to hear about this. not only did the steward not doing anything, but it sounds like he treated you son like a piece of sh!t with the way he was talking as well!

1 last point, good on your son for having the balls to try and do something about it, and report, at least one good thing can be taken from this!!

Can, i suggest you drop the club an email, perhaps the stadium manager, copy in uncle ron, goeff king and perhaps the football league (i'm sure they'd appreciate us not following up a racist incident). That way i think that something might actually be done about our incompetent stewards, they are after all supposed to be trained to assist us and any problems that arise. Perhaps if enough people complain they might do something about getting some decent stewards in.

I was not having a go at the club about this but my complaint is the way the steward reacted when told of the incident.

The steward in question was wearing a bright green jacket without a number.

But the steward is representing the club, so he must act on this information. The fact that he didnt means that if he's not pulled up on it, next time he'll do exactly the same and it may result in the club getting punished !

Of course he should.

When I tackled him about the matter at half time he said he had radioed it in (which killed my arguement) but why could he not say that to my son at the time, instead they pick on youngsters standing up and not being racist.

And it gets better... 2000 Wednesday fans stand for 90 minutes and a few make racist remarks. SUFC fans stand at the rear and one is banned from Tuesday's game but he is assured that there will be a letter sent to the Sheffield Wednesday fans about them standing. I cannot see many Owls wanting to come along and see SUFC v Norwich.

I will continue to make this point periodically,if someone stands up persistently my young son cannot see. We buy tickets to sit in an all seater stadium. What is the problem?

It is much easier to steward/police customers who want to comeback on a regular basis, Wednesday fans obviouslt do not.

Yes we could all stand up, but my son is on the left of me and three pensioners are on the right of me,and they could not stand up for 90 minutes.

i would like to add my penny's worth here:

i was sitting in a seat, and was then removed as it wasn't my seat.. i threw away my ticket on entry to the ground, and was manhandled and patronised by a steward with a clipboard.. Number 59 orange jacket.. i was then taken to the security box and questioned by police and the stadium manager as to the where abouts of my ticket.. i then suggested perhaps they would like me to stay after the match and look for it in the ground.. they then asked if i had ever had a season ticket, and i said yes.. so the name and address was given to these cretins, and they checked the system to see if i had a season ticket.. of course it came back as "no" as i had one last year.. so then they call me a liar.. i then have to be escorted out the stadium to buy yet another bloody ticket... only to see by the west stand ticket office, that a van full of policeman were called to the incident.. now sorry, what a waste of money.. i wasn't rude, i wasn't aggressive i even offered to leave the ground to stop all confusion and fuss..

so this is my statement:
The club will be hearing from me, my legal advisor and i will contact the Football liason officer..
I was humiliated, and denied basic human rights of using a toilet..

i want a full refund on my second ticket, and an apology by the said steward "Number 59 orange jacket with a clipboard" or i will take legal action to the way it was dealt with.. top marks to the female PC who helped me out and pleaded my case..

personally i will also be writing to the football league authorities and to Ron martin himself.. if i do not get a response a massed demonstration on the streets of london will entail.. with a trip to number 10..

ok probably not the last bit..

the point i am trying to make, is that these stewards or security have to watch themselves.. because they are not going to encounter many mild mannered people like me.. and it only takes one ****ed up fan who is bigger than them and they will come a cropper..

i hope that this doesn't happen.. but unless they change their ways, they should be wary of some anti-steward feeling that is bouncing around the hall..

We all know standing is wrong but this person was in the back row, my problem is that the same steward did not act when my son reported racism to him. Surely being a steward you should try and enforce ALL the ground rules not just the ones that are easiest for you. He got his priorities wrong - you cannot argue with that !

So from what you are saying it is ok for Owls fans to abuse our players because they won't come back next week, sorry that does not wash with me.

Do white people really make 'monkey noise's'?
I would be somewhat surprised if the do. Think about it, how much of a pratt would you feel if you started giving it the big peruvian red top jackobean silverdong squark!
I've no doubt that those from up north would feel no different.
Racism in this country has been dead for many a year. Sheffield wednesday have had many a player who has been darker than the average anglo saxon. They have'nt got any history of being racist.

Sensationalism is ****.

Why was you ejected from your seat ? was it becouse someone turned up late and found you sitting in it. To be fair, if the stewards asked you to produce your ticket and you dont have one what are they supposed to do ? As for looking for it after the match is ridiculas. Its your responsibility to retain your ticket and sit in the correct seat. No sympathy from me

Also, come on CSJ, what did you expect them to do? Put yourself in their position. They may have got a bit heavy handed with you from what you say but surely an insy weensy ticket don't hurt being in your back pocket, why chuck it away?
Hang on to your tickets and flog them on ebay in 20 years time.
