Tuesday’s match against Brighton will be refereed by Grant Hegley. An experienced official, this will be his 10th League match at Roots Hall (won 6, drawn 1, lost 2 (to York and Boston of all teams!)). He has not yet refereed a Southend away League game although he officiated in the 2-0 LDV win at Northampton.

He has a somewhat laissez faire style to his refereeing, resulting in far less than average cards. He has only sent off one player in 28 months. Has already had 7 cardless games this season including 4 in a row; most referees don’t manage that in a career. He hit the headlines two seasons ago when he was suspended for too lenient refereeing. Shortly after that he showed ten yellow cards in a game twice. I’m sure the assessors must have been much happier with that. Has long since reverted back to his original style.

Assisted by Dave Bushell from London and Harry Lennard from Sussex !!

He's the guy who looks like Martin from Game On, isn't he? Quite a good ref from what I remember.

A referee who doesn't brandish cards easily, that is excellent news. With Bailey on 9 bookings we don't need a card happy ref

Isn't it the card amnesty on Sunday ?? ... though i'm not sure if that only counts for players with 1 > 4 yellows ??

Hopefully someone can explain how it works cos :stupidme:

The amnesty on Sunday is for players with 10 bookings (ie. if Bailey avoids a yellow card in the next two games he'll be ok). The amnesty for 5 bookings was a few weeks ago so somebody like Francis who's on 4 isn't at risk of a suspension should he get 5.

Still enough time for Macca to get suspended for 15 bookings though!

Aah ... thank you, have some green for your help :)

.... don't speak too soon. Darren Deadman on Saturday. 13 cards on his last two visits to the Hall. More about him later.
