Next up, we play Woking for the seventh time in the club’s history. Our record against them could not be more finely balanced: in League matches it’s one win each and two draws. Cup matches are also tied at one apiece. In total, we’ve scored 8 goals, they’ve scored 8 goals.
Woking are referred to as “the Cards”, not through any abundance of red and yellow cards (although on the evidence of the home match against them that would be quite apposite), but as a contraction of the Cardinals. Again, nothing religious, simply their shirt colours were designated cardinal red. Regular winners of the FA Trophy a while back (although they lost in the final to Grays in the one I saw with Jamie Stuart, Stuart Thurgood, Michael Kightly and Gary Hooper in the Grays squad) and before that FA Amateur Cup winners, their most famous result is probably their 4-2 FA Cup win at West Bromwich Albion with a memorable hat-trick for Tony Buzaglo.
On to the officials. I think it’s fair to say the standard has risen a bit of late, since the nadir that was Paul Cooper at York. Well, we have another Police Officer at Woking but I will be surprised if he is not significantly better. It is Callum Walchester from Lowestoft taking charge of just his second National League match, the first having been Wealdstone against Oldham last Saturday which seemed to go okay with just two yellow cards.
He was making his way along the Assistant Referee path, having lined at Roots Hall on half a dozen occasions, but decided to concentrate on his refereeing and is working his way up with that. He has refereed Southend once before – a very reasonable performance in the Cup match against Chertsey at Roots Hall, two years ago. I've seen him quite a bit in the National League South and his approach has always been one of minimum intervention. Fingers crossed.
The whole on-field team has a decidedly East Anglian look about it with the Assistants being Andrew Gray from Ipswich and Jonathon Block from Risby, near Bury St Edmunds. Fourth Official is Steven Hughes from Sussex.
