Post-Match Thread and Ratings Rochdale 3-4 Southend United

Some things are just written in the stars.

On the night that we sadly learned about the passing of Gerry Fell who was instrumental in giving us a truly unbelievable comeback way back in 1977, then we go and do something just as amazing a few hours later. I bet he is smiling looking down on us all now. 🩵

It may seem like a small thing to some, but joining the dots like this is one of the many things that makes this football club great.

Fantastic night. Hats off to Kev and the boys and especially to the fans who made the journey. Its was actually great game to watch. Maybe not for all of you but was for those of us that can keep our nerve.

Glad I never read any of the match thread until this morning. They scored two quality goals in the first half but not for one second did I think we were out of it. On to FGR and remember the most important thing....We are looking forward to it, they aren't.

What a game! As fans we always ask that the team give it their all and no doubt they did that.

Once again Bonne showed that, whilst not a prolific goalscorer, he has a footballing brain higher than NL and his introduction was key to the result (as well as Parillon). No doubt we need to work on our defensive shape and communication between goalkeeper and defence but don't underestimate how the nature of the win yesterday will give the team a huge amount of confidence.

I think the lads need those 5 days though, last night would have taken a lot out of them physically and then they’ve gotta travel back unless they did last night? But either way they’ll be buzzing but exhausted for a couple of days.

Someone on here said last night they’d rather be in our position with momentum after last night than Forest Green’s with no game for however long. Have to agree with that. But make no mistake, Wednesday night will be a much sterner test and we’ll have to be at our absolute best to get the result.

Two things - I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I think Charley Kendall has got the potential to really be star for us. I think his attitude and swagger suits playing in front of bigger crowds and he could really emerge next year.

Secondly, I actually think it’s important we keep Macauley Bonne for next year. He’s clearly a leader in the dressing room, his passion is infectious and he seems to have the knack of being involved in moments that matter.
Fully agree with this. I did note that CK ran to the away fans after scoring and repeatedly said “what, what” and cupped his ear. Maybe he’d read the zone .. maybe the moaners are actually spurring them on 🤷🏼

Hayes 3 all at sea most of the game, first goal he was so favourite to dive on it but hesitated, stood up instead and gifted them a start, even fence sitter Pennyfather said it five times, why is he not anticipating anything?
Taylor 5 not his usual gritty/reliable performance
Goodliffe 6 another not at his best but contributed to a goal
Ralph 7 Mr dependable and a well taken goal
Husin 5 has never rediscovered old form and fancy Miley to take his place
Coker 6 not contributing like he was before
KAF 10 best player most weeks, he upsets the opposition with the tenacity and amazingly couldn’t get a game for weeks.
With Parillon in the top two assets
Bridge 5 back to his ineffective self, bench place at best.
Walker 5 just don’t do it given an opportunity, 4th in line as a striker
Hopper 8 lead the line well, much better and well taken goal
Gus 7 some lovely balls put through and this team wouldn’t look the same without him
Parillon 7 offers something different and another valuable asset, keep it quiet
Bonne 7 one of three subs to change the game, great movement, experience and love or loathe him he is a worthwhile team member
Kendall 7 how Walker started in front of him is a mystery and so he justified it

An unbelievable pinch me night of play off football. Got home at 03.30 knackered but buzzing this morning. We started slowly, conceded a poor goal albeit decent by their lad. got ourselves back in it and looked the better side but then conceded by our standards another poor goal and from there Rochdale bossed the game. Didn't look like a penalty and having seen it since im still not convinced but at 3-1 you think its game over. But the subs made a huge difference. Bonne ran the channels, Leon was everywhere and Kendall started putting their back line under pressure and we suddenly looked like a team capable of winning. Brilliant cross and header from Hopper gets us back in it, Bonne breaks the back line and crosses for leon to eventually get the ball over the line and from no where we are back in it. extra time we looked strong and Cav crosses for Goodliffe (always looks a threat at set pieces) and there is Kendall to poach the winner. It was pandemonium in the away end.

At 3-1 we were deservedly losing, too many players had an off night. Bridge, Coker, Walker, Husin (up until the second goal), Hopper all struggled at times. We were looking more likely to concede another rather than score oursleves. But if ever a game was won by the subs then that was it. We looked better in a back 4 also.

Hayes commanded his area when we needed him the most and made two brilliant saves towards the end of the first half. Goodliffe, Taylor and Ralph were colossus when we needed them towards the end of the second half and into extra time. Gus found some life and was linking up well with Bonne and keenan. Husin found some energy and all of a sudden was putting the tackles in and tracking back that had been missing for most of the game. Leon oozed class got his assist and goal. but for me the MOM was KAF. he was imense and even during the poorer parts of the game he was the main shining light. He has now become one of the first names of the sheet and deservedly so. So much energy and how he didnt get a penalty only the ref knows. The ref by the way i thought was dreadful.

Lastly the fans, what an atmosphere and admittedly at 3-1 it was flat but we still tried to get behind the team and the noise in extra time and at the end will live long. So next up FGR and a game we are more than capable of winning. We must take so much from last the night the good and the bad but go with confidence. What a club we have and we should be proud of night like last night

oh dear, what about the two massive saves at the end of the first half? he had no chance with any of the goals but when we needed him he came up with the goods. not saying he is an 8 or 9 far from it but 3 is ludicrous

I wouldn't get too reactive to Wiggy. He has his views and his prejudices, but as long as we keep on winning, he can post what he likes, we don't have to agree with him.

What a match! Strangely, I never really doubted us, even at 3-1 down. This is the team that doesn't know when it's beaten and the Club that refused to die.

What if Taylor was a little out of sorts, or Bridgey's legs looked worn out? They gave it their all last night - and then some. I hope Macauley Bonne has now convinced even those few remaining who doubted him, what he brings to the team.

Quality knee slide from Charley as well!

So very proud of them all.

I think a 3 for Hayes is very harsh. And a 10 for KAF ? way too dramatic ! Yes, he had a great game. But for a 10, I think he'd have to at least score 1-2 goals, and provide some assists

I'm going to hold my hands up for criticism of Hayes on the Match Thread. I said he was at fault for both 1st half goals. On reviewing the highlights I'll let him off the 2nd.

Still stand by my comments regarding the 1st. Really think he should have dived at the ball rather than stand tall and try and use his feet.

Great start of the comeback by Hopper. Got the rebound of the post and was quickest to react, and then the same with Leon. 1st goal for Leon. Don't think you'll find a much more crucial 1st goal for this club

2 goals in 6 minutes with a stone wall penalty not 2 minutes later. Ref bottled that decision.
