I'd say most probably. That's why the slope is there.

...Whilst also taking a defender out of the box, giving more room to pick out a Southend head. At least, that's the reasoning that Big Sam (I think it was) gave. If you think that way, it actually makes a lot of sense.

I would imagine, it would also make refs less liekly to blow for fouls against defensive players.
