The first of today's heats brings together a battle of titanic proportions,

John Lennon - Canveyshrimper v Bob Dylan - Dick Bate's Protege.

Sorry Bob, you wrote some great songs between '62 and '75 but Lennon means more to me than you ever will.

Got to be Dylan here, Lennon was obviously a class act, but Dylan was one of his influences. Was Lennon capable of writing the quality of lyric that Dylan has managed throughout his long career? Not in my opinion.

The strength of Dylan's songwriting is often seen in the covers of his songs by the likes of The Byrds, Hendrix and Guns n Roses. Although his songs can seem simple, there is clearly a depth in there, and as alluded to earlier, his lyrics are up with the very best.

'The ghost of electricity, howls in the bones of her face.'. Visions of Johanna

Vote Dylan, for he the daddy.

And of course it has to be Lennon. I probably couldn't have asked for a tougher draw, as Dylan was one of my earliest musical heroes, but ultimately Lennon and The Beatles mean more. As this is judged on a writers entire career, I would suggest that The Beatles were and maybe still are the most influential band of all time.

When they came to prominence in this country in 1962 popular music was limited to the BBC Light Programme and at nights Radio Luxembourg which frustratingly faded in and out. The Beatles changed all that, with also a lot of help from the pirate radio stations that started to spring up in 1963/4. Pop music finally came to the young and of course the wider public. In the wake of The Beatles came many of the best bands this country have produced.

IMO Dylan & Lennon have a lot in common, in particular writing protest songs. My opponent in this battle speaks highly about the quality of lyric Dylan produced. However I think Lennon was a better lyricist, how much of this was down to his experiments with drugs I can't say. He has remained hugely influential on modern bands and music despite his untimely death.

Vote John Lennon.

Bit of work to do here, so....

After listening to these tracks, I think even Lennon may have voted for Dylan.

This win's it for me! Got to be Dylan... I don't think there is anyone more musically important still alive! One of the most influential artists ever, and certainly one of the greatest song writers.

But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

Really tough one this. But John Lennon just pips it for me as I think that should he still be alive today he'd still be writing good/great songs. Bob Dylan wrote most of his great songs (IMO) in his early days.

'Time Out Of Mind' is probably my favourite album of the nineties. 'Modern Times' - released just a few years ago - is a fine album too.

Definitely one of the toughest ever, and I'd be inclined to vote for Dylan, certainly one of the most influential artists and writers ever. But I think Lennonand The Beatles were even more so.

This tighter than a gnats chuff. Vote Lennon.

John Lennon wrote some great songs but he didn't write 'Like A Rolling Stone' - probably one of the finest songs ever recorded.
