...... has passed away at the age of 86.

A legendary (in the proper sense of the word) striker from the 50s who, after retiring, ran a pub in Donaghadee, County Down, which was opened by George Best in 1969.

RIP

(I'm sure there'll be a little tribute on the official site sometime soon.)

Could anyone with memories of Sam please contact me on 01268 469307 for an obit I am doing in the Echo.

Thanks,

Chris

RIP The great man, remembered with much affection. My thoughts are with his family.

The bit in the Echo mentioned McCrory going to Sweden for the 1958 World Cup. There were two ex-Southend players in that squad with Norman Uprichard going as reserve keeper.

Has this happened? I can't see it.

Nope I can't find any tribute to Sam on the official site either, pretty poor show from Southend United again. Mind you dont forget this is a club that had a Centenary match a year late & had to let the team play one of its most important home games ever in it's away shirt! Also a club that sells you a 'Legacy' T-Shirt for £150 makes you pay for it now knowing full well we will be at Roots Hall for at least another 3 seasons!

RIP Sam.
