Is it just me or are these not as good as they used to be?

I have a bag I purchased from Waitrose yesterday and every second one seems to lack flavour.

It's not like they are cheap either. You are effectively playing Russian roulette these days every time you venture into the fruit aisle.

Amen my friend. Got two of these badboys with me today. Not only are they near on impossible to peel without ending up dripping with sticky liquid, every other segment has a pip and they taste bitter. Plus - like you say, they aren't cheap either, neither do they last 5 minutes in the fruit bowl. Bad times.

Clems are my favourite, but they are not as sweet as they used to be, plus they cost a bomb. Somehow they have got sharper in taste, or i'm buying the wrong ones.

Bought some Clementines from Marks and Spencers last week and they were delicious!!

I am currently munching on two clementines and they are lovely. I got mine from Somerfields, and probably paid a lot less than you did!

I agree that the quality of citrus fruit is pretty poor this winter, especially satsumas and clems. They're god damn miniature as well - shouldn't there be some kind of size standard? :p

can't stand it when you end up with those watery, overly sweet ones. Frankly, i like a bit of tart.

I take back what I said, I just ahd two sainsburys Clementines and while they were tough on the peeling stakes, they were lovely and sweet. Much like me.

But which Somerfield did you buy them from?

Citrus fruit generally seems to have gone down hill in the past decade.

My mum has been banging on about this for years now. It must be all the fertilizers that they use on all fruit. Vegetables and salad is the same. You can't have a bag of potatoes 5 minutes before they grow eyes (I think that's what they are called), fruit goes mouldy, salad doesn't keep. Grow your own!

As have apples in my opinion.

Anyway, I always stick to Satumas when available. Tangerines / Clementines occasionaly sneak in a pip or two.

I fear pips.

You are taking the pith! I peel quite happy with my fruit options at the moment although it makes me segmental when the supermarket runs out of satsumas.

Somerfields in Benfleet

What ****s me off is that you can't buy a ripe banana anymore they are either Green or Green / slightly yellow and are as tough as old boots to peel , there fine if you buy them on the weekend hoping to eat them 5 days later , but im ****ing hungry now and don't wanna wait that long .

Well you should have bought some 5 days ago then shouldn't you, they would be just ripe for eating!!!

That's the problem with supermarkets. They have driven down wholesale prices so much the supplier can't give them the quality. They also charge us a huge mark up in the process.

Guess what the supermarkets then go and do? Having got us all used the the taste of crap fruit and veg they bring out their superior ranges (Like Taste the Difference) and charge more for it. So we are now paying a premium for the quality we used to get.

When I find a decent fruit and veg market round these parts I intend to start going there.
