We trail Scunthorpe by some way in head-to-head League matches - 15 wins to their 22 with 15 draws. This is largely down to our results at their two grounds where our 27 matches (incl one Cup game) have yielded meagre pickings with just two wins and a handful of draws (including one when I saw us clinch our first ever promotion at the Old Showground).
The last win there was 34 years ago, but what a win. A 6-1 victory which features in both the hattricks (Steve Phillips) and high scores threads. The other was 6 years earlier with goals from Derrick Parker and Mickey Laverick for a 2-1.
We're back to the inexperienced officials this week with Saturday's match being refereed by Martin Coy of County Durham who takes charge of his 13th (unlucky for some?) ever League match. In addition he has done 4 Checkatrades and 2 proper Cup matches. Unsurprisingly he has refereed neither Scunthorpe nor Southend before.
He signed off from "Conference" football last season with the playoff semi-final between Forest Green and Dagenham and seems to have settled in to League football quietly. Those eighteen games have produced a remarkably low 34 yellows and a more average 3 reds,
He ran the line in away League matches at Stockport, Leeds, Accrington and more memorably in that disappointing match at Morecambe. He was then "reserve lino" for our playoff match at Wembley. Those of us who were sat behind him at Morecambe a couple of weeks earlier might have been wondering if he was deserving of such an appointment.
He will be assisted by Paul Newhouse from Peterlee, Durham and another Southend debutant Lee Freeman from Sheffield who, like the referee, is in his first year at this level. Fourth Official is Seb Stockbridge, a fully fledged referee (although you wouldn't think so judging by the penalty he awarded last Saturday, the red card for which was promptly overturned). He is now from Gateshead having previously been based in Sunderland.
