Self employment/Public liability insurance

Guys

I know there'll be people out there who can help here, with the lad now having completed a whole week at work as a window fitter's mate, he's been told he has to be registered as self employed and have public liability insurance.

Anyone know anything about this, able to offer advice or guidace? It should've been done over the weekend apparently but he and his father did not communicate and now it needs to be done very urgently.

Self employed? Surely he's been employed by the window fitter and therefore it's down to that person to pay his tax, otherwise I can imagine it'd be a nightmare tax wise.

That's what I thought, but they're sub contracted by Anglian. It all sounded a little dodgy to me, but then that area's a minefield as far as I'm concerned.

Dont think thats particularly dodgey.

My previous house was built by bryant but few of the people working on the site were actually bryant employees. There were all sub contractors or subbies if you prefer.

I'd get him to ask around at work. His colleagues should know what to do and what the best deals are. I don't know whether there is an union or trade association but if there is they'll probably be able to offer better insurance deals as they'll be able to get a bulk discount.

Hmm....yes, that's what any sensible person would do, but he doesn't like asking questions for fear it makes him look daft! Anyway, he'll have to today, the website he managed to get hold of for registering requires you to be over 21. I must admit, I did think that being under 18 might be an issue.
