Sheff Weds Game...

Looks like Wednesday could be without No1 choice keeper Brad Jones for their visit on Saturday...

Would be a right result if he isn't available, he's a quality keeper.

He is awful. He put up the most inept goalkeeping performance Vs Arsenal when they lost 7-0. He really is bad, in my opinion.

Another little note on the game Saturday...

Wednesday have sold over 1,600 tickets already so the North bank will be packed with around 2,000 Wendies come KO...

Should be another 9-10,000 gate then.

Let's make some noise.

3 points are needed from this lot if we have ambitions of staying in this league.

Not just first choice keeper, I believe he's their only keeper. Sturrock was desperate to sign Scott Carson in the summer and took Jones at the last minute when he realised he wasn't going to get the only keeper he'd been after.

According to the Wendies OS, they have another two keepers at the club Richard O'Donnell, an 18 year old with no first team experience...and Chris Adamson who has made a grand total of 8 appearances in two years!!...

You have to fancy our chances on Sat if Jones is ruled out.

Good news if Jones is out for Saturday but there's still the rest of the Wednesday team to beat as well...

How?  Based on
- Fredy's last 3 league games when it's been generally accepted by all that he's been well under par.
- Paynter is still settling in & basically yet to have a proper shot.  I'm not counting the hoof vs Stoke or the flail vs QPR.
- Bradders despite one of our most consistent players, still being shot shy but has at least had one.
- Ricketts presumably being unfit, fat, not interested* (*delete as appropriate).  My view FWIW is he's just injury prone.
- Lawson who looked terrible vs the Cherries.
- Hooper who could be a real prospect, but it'd be a big ask if Fredy's not firing.
- Harrold who most people seem to have discounted already but then he is gingerysortofishinanoncontroversialway.  But again, realistically a big step up so a tall order.
- And finally, the Owls back 4 will be geed up defending an inexperienced keeper.  Never seen that before I'd say.
- Or more likely, they get a top notch Prem 2nd reserve keeper before the weekend.

So basically IMO.  If Fredy plays well we'll have a good chance.  If he's off the ball again,.I'd not be at all confident as to who's going to score our goals.

Not to mention they've been playin Chris Brunt, a Left winger, as a sole forward the last few weeks because of a striker crisis.

As has already been said, we really must be looking at taking 3 points from this fixture.

Well said.

I'm not confident about our chances in any match at the moment...

another big team, lower than they should be....

a chance to really make an impression! important to keep our home form going until we get something on the road.

that's a fact.

Big City, yesterday's has beens. Always been a yo yo team ever since I've been following the game.

And ourselves, let's try talking us up.

We are no pushovers even at this level but we need goal scorers from midfield and better service to the front men. If we can start banging them in then the rest had better watch out.

Paul Sturrock - who is he when we have got Steve Tilson, a young English manager and already cutting his teeth with the national squad.

Afterall Steve McLaren played for Hull City and was only spotlighted by his links with Fergie.

However, we won't become today's flavour until that stadium is in place.

We must at least compete with the Ipswich's and Norwich's of this world who have passed us by along the way and in doing so have developed far better stadiae than us.

So come on let's get up their this time and don't let's look over our shoulders.

Onwards and Upwards !

Can anyone ever remember us taking advantage of the other side not having a decent goalkeeper?

We failed to score against one arm bandit Ian Feuer (IIRC he injured an arm and couldn't raise it above shoulder height)when we lost away at Luton about a decade ago, Steve Brown went in goal for Charlton and we failed to have a worthwhile shot in a 1-1 draw, we even failed to score against joke keeper Nathan Abbey when we lost 2-0 at Boston 2 seasons ago.

Even when our own superstars have gone in goal I think Tilly was only beaten by a spot-kick when Sammy was sent off v Boro, Tes the Cat conceded just one and pulled off a load of saves that our first choice wouldn't have made. I mean we even managed to get promoted - twice - with a dwarf in goal*. I think you have to go back to Peter Taylor replacing Derek Belloti to see the last time not having a recognised goalkeeper actually changed the course of a Southend match.

*For the avoidance of doubt this is a joke

Its be interesting if Sheffield Weds goalkeeper get sent off after 10 minute! Well we cannot beat Windass in Bradford goal in 2nd half after he took over from "Big Fat Lier" who got sent off for sticking his finger up at South Stand!

Urgh, what a depressing memory that is. That game (randomly) was live on TV, and I remember watching the game in a pub. Feuer landed really heavily, IIRC, and could barely move for the rest of the game - but Luton left him on as they had no reserve keeper on the bench.

I spent the whole game screaming "SHOOOOOT!!!" at the telly, but it was in vain. In a pathetic, gutless, clueless and talentless performance - which was to become the hallmark of the Alvin Martin style - we lost one or two nil, I believe.

Awful, awful, awful. Thanks for reminding me, HKB...
