Historically we have a very marginal edge over Sheffield United in League games.

Man in charge tomorrow is 35-year old, Geoff Eltringham from Sunderland. He is in his eighth season as a League referee and will be refereeing just his fourth Southend match.

Sadly, we have not won a single point from any of his previous matches.

The first one was our 2-1 away defeat at Carlisle towards the beginning of the 2009/10 season when he cautioned Macca, Grant and Barnard.

Then the following season he presided over our 1-0 defeat at Crewe, just one yellow for them.

Finally he was in charge at Stevenage for our 4-2 defeat the year before last. A match which saw a penalty apiece and a yellow card apiece - ours going to Coker.

We have seen nothing of him since that match, which is probably just as well given his propensity for red cards. He has shown 55 at a rate of roughly one every 4 games - which is more than double the average !

He is an ex-Sunderland season ticket holder, Chairman of the Sunderland Referees' Association and works in the timber trade and he is one of the shorter officials.

His yellow card count is well below average, surprisingly given his record of red cards, with last season's stats 93 yellows and 8 reds from 37 games. This season his 3 matches have produced 7 yellows and he already has a red on the board.

Assisting will be Simon Clayton from Redcar and Graeme Fyvie, also from Sunderland. He is Vice-Chairman of the Sunderland Referees' Association (are there any others? I don't know!) Fast rising black official, Akil Howson from Leicester will be 4th official.
