SHRIMPERZONE GOLF CHALLENGE 2005

The Costa Blanca is renowned for some of the best golf courses in Spain and the countryside around Jávea is no exception. Therefore we have teamed up with TeeOff2Spain, a golfing holiday specialist in the area (coincidentally co-managed by a Southend United fan) to put together a proposal for an inaugural ShrimperZone International Golf Challenge weekend to take place next year and therefore we put out an initial "APB" to all the SZ community to gather interest for such a competition.

The current proposal includes a long-weekend stay at the Denia-Marriott Hotel, a few miles inland from Jávea, which lies on the very edge of the impressive 18-hole La Sella Golf Club ('designed' by Jose Maria Olazabal) for two days of golf plus an evening of entertainment. Initial talk suggest that the challenge could take the form of a "fan/celebrity" tournament over the weekend in the style of the Ryder Cup, recently won so convincingly by the Europeans. (In fact the whole concept was derived whilst watching the likes of Monty and Sergio Garcia comprehensively defeat the Yanks on their own patch!) Indeed, our golfing contacts here in Jávea are willing to  contact ex-Shrimpers and other notable players to provide the 'celebrity' half of the tournament.

For the gentler sex (i.e. the partners who want to experience some Springtime sun next year without the need to spoil it with a good walk around a golf course), we have also negotiated a number of deals with the Marriott Hotel's health and beauty spa for their "Spa Experience" so no-one will feel left out. We can also look at a day shopping in Valencia, just an hour's drive away.

If you are genuinely interested in taking part, please send me an e-mail to mike@shrimperzone.com. The more the merrier ...

Depends. Individually we're looking at about £250 including accomodation, transfers, the golf, etc. For couples, we're looking at around £550 including accomodation, transfers, the golf, the spa experience, etc. Prices are v-e-r-y rough at the moment ...

I've been to that hotel. Its brand new and top quality (and I think relatively cheap because it is so new) - the golf course is really good too. Highly recommend the gazpacho and a cerveza on a hot day after a round.

What dates are you thinking of?

The hotel is about two years old now. Set in a great location with the mountain of Montgo on its doorstep; it's about a ten minute drive from where we are in Jávea ...

We're thinking around Easter time but we need to guage the response first and then we can put together far firmer details ...

The parents are going to Malaga in March and asked if i want to come but haven't given an answer as yet. I think a bit of negiotating may be needed. I also need to get myself some new clubs and get back out there. Seeing as the brother is off 3, then he can be my coach and im pretty sure he would come as well.

The trumpet wouldn't fit in the suitcase though ...

Is there a casino in the area or not? Winning some Euro's sounds like a good idea.

Kev, if you want to make some money in a casino the only way to do it is buy one for yourself. Btw Mike they're talking about putting SuperCasinos in Southend à la Las Vegas. Fancy a neighbour ?

I might be interested mike.I'll have to try and convince the wife.i played in a tourney today and our foursome finished 4th out of 23.we could try and do a England-v- the rest of the world.

Sorry mate, golf is 'a good walk spoiled'.

if you were looking to organise the inaugural 'Shrimperzone sitting in the Spanish sun drinking beer' weekend then I'd be far more tempted.
