New Signing Slavi Spasov signs

SLOUGH Town boss Scott Davies has revealed how Slavi Spasov stayed patient in his bid to join Southend United.

The Bulgarian striker signed for the Shrimpers from the National League South side last month.

And it has now emerged Spasov rejected moves elsewhere to keep his preferred move to Roots Hall alive.

“The beauty with Slav is he’s not rushed into it,” explained Davies.

“He could’ve gone to another National League club and other clubs too who are full-time but he waited and held out hoping that Southend would call because there were some rumours there was interest.

“Finally they phoned me and his patience has paid off now because he’s got the move that he wanted.”

Spasov will therefore begin pre-season training with Blues later this week.

And Davies always knew the 23-year-old would be moving on this summer.

“We knew it would be inevitable,” said Davies.

“When you get 17 goals in a team that finishes slightly below mid-table you’re always going to attract attention.”

Spasov will now be looking to show what he can do with the Shrimpers. And Davies believes the forward will bring a variety of strengths to the Blues strike-force.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him by speaking too highly of him but he can do a bit of everything,” said Davies.

“He’s got the physical presence to be an old school number nine in terms of his hold up play and he can go in behind too.

"I think he’s just a really intelligent footballer. He’s been well educated throughout his time at Oxford United and I’ve always thought he was someone who should be playing minimum National League if not higher but injuries held him back a little back.

"For me to see him get back into full-time football, which was his goal, is extra special.

“He’s finally got back to a level where he deserves to be.”

Spasov spent two years with Slough before making the switch to the Shrimpers. And Davies has no qualms whatsoever about the forward’s character.

“He’s an absolute diamond,” said Davies.

“He turned down three moves last season to three different clubs in three different countries - one in Scotland, one in Wales and one in England.

“He’s been fiercely loyal to us and said he was enjoying his football, that we’d been good to him and that he wanted to stay loyal.

"He wanted to keep on scoring goals and then see where that took him at the end of the season. For me it’s good karma it’s worked out the best it could be for him.

“He fully deserves the move and I’m over the moon for him.”

Spasov will be now be teaming up with Leon Parillon, who also joined Blues from Slough back in January.

And Davies is certain that will be a big help for the forward.

“Slavi and Leon are linking up again and they’re best mates,” said Davies.

“I know they’re planning on living together so it’s nice he’s got someone there he can gel with straight away.

"For us it’s a nice story we have a really good working relationship with Southend.

"They’re a massive club in the league above and I think it’s a compliment to us when we lose players to Southend.”

“He could’ve gone to another National League club and other clubs too who are full-time but he waited and held out hoping that Southend would call because there were some rumours there was interest.

“Finally they phoned me and his patience has paid off now because he’s got the move that he wanted.”
If you take it on face value the positives are he had offers but wanted us, the slight criticism is we took our time and if it wasn’t for him specifically holding out hope we’d get in touch then we may have lost out.

In reality we were probably in contact with the player but just hadn’t made an official approach, but you could read into it different angles.

Maybe we were waiting to see what league we were in?

Yeah it's likely nothing to worry about, just combined with the noises some are making who have some contacts in the club about frustrations with transfers dragging due to trying to be data-led, and missing out on the now-crawley player (though Austin seems better) that quote jumped out at me as potentially relevant.
