Just enjoying comparing the league table before our "crunch" four matches, versus the table now.

We were:

4th, 6 points behind 3rd, 6 points behind Second and 9 points behind First. We were 4 points ahead of 8th, and almost every team in contention  had a game in hand on us.

After playing four of the better/best teams, we are:

6th, 3 points behind Third, 6 points behind Second, and 8 points behind First. We are 6 points ahead of 8th, and only Yeovil and Northampton of our nearest rivals have  a game  in hand over us.

At the start of the month I would realistically have taken still being (just) in the playoffs as being a success. To have improved our position, ie to be be nearer an automatic place and further from 8th, while our rivals have now mostly played their games-in-hand is fantastic.

Rejoice!!!

Also tonight Swansea, Lincoln and Scunny have very tough games, and even Northampton are away to Rochdale, so 3 points tonight is a must if we want to put pressure on the teams around us.

Hopefully by the end of tonight we could be just 3 points of 2nd place, come on you mighty blues.

Just shows what a run Macclesfield are having too. I cant believe it, they were so dire at Roots Hall at the end of last season

Would have to be six goals, Swansea have a better "Goals For" (by 8).

It's Yeovil V Scunny and Darlington V Swansea tonight (if they're not postponed) so the teams around us will definitely be taking points off each other. A win tonight would put us in a very good position.

No it would need to be only 5 as Swansea would have to lose for us to be on the same points as them . So that means their GD will drop by 1 at least!!

Actually, it's the combined goal difference of our game and Swansea's game. So we could win 1-0 (my bet for tonight's score, BTW) and still go third (if Swansea lose 5-0 or worse).

You are, as usual, quite correct!

We could go top tonight IF......

1. We win, Swansea lose and our goal difference over them increases by six.

2. Disgraceful scenes at the Yeovil - Scunthorpe match result in the FA deducting ten points from both clubs.

So would I, Terry.

Just to have an official "bah, humbug!" moment:

In the previous two meetings in the league between Southend and Shrewsbury at Roots Hall...

...the Shrews have taken all 3 points back with them to Shropshire on both occasions.

Let's count no chickens, folks. We were lucky against Northampton, and we'll need to play a lot better today if we're to beat the Shrews.

Matt

Well said Matt - it's always easier for a team to win when there is no expectation for them to win; it's a different pressure this week when, more than likely, we'll face two teams that'll put 11 men and the team bus in front of the goal.

But - and this is where I think we differ from last season - we're sticking our chances away. It's as simple as that!

Don't be so negative!

Let's see if we can't catch Yeovil tonight...

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

I am in "Good Mood Polite Mode" today, Kev. Hope I still am at 22:00.

Lincoln look to have the toughest run of games over the next 5-6 weeks of so i believe and Macclesfield are punching above there weight. I'm almost certain that we will be in the top 3 by the end of the season after seeing the Northampton win. I just hope we don't struggle against lower sides who stick ten men behind the ball at Roots Hall.

Yep. The last time they played us off the park too. That was the game where Luke Rodgers scored two amazing goals for them.

I still fancy us tonight though.
