Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Stevenage

Great 25 minutes but rest was poor. Again we failed to make the most of those early chances. Akinola should of scored and looks like his confidence has gone. Ferguson was unlucky with the free kick and fair play to their goalkeeper for that save. After that early spell of pressure we went back to are old ways. To many crap long balls which end up leading to nothing.

MM should of brought fresher legs on sooner. We clearly needed freshening up around the 65 minute when stevenage were on top as we looked tired and sluggish. In my mind that's poor management from MM.

I can't see us staying up. Said this previously, not signing a striker or 2 in January probably going to cost us are league status.

Defensively we have become one of the better teams in the division which is a big achievement from where we came from pre MM and pre embargo.

Echo what others have said. We don't have the intelligence, creativity, desire, or know how in the final third to make things happen. The football when we play it in the final third isn't bad, even the rare delivery into the box can be quite good but we just won't score the goals required to stay in the league.

I firmly believe that Mark Molesley has done a half decent job, looking at our form since his hand ties were removed doesn't lie and we aren't actually a bad side for 4 5ths of the pitch in this god awful division but when 46 games have been played we will be in the bottom two for one reason. No goal threat.

The question for me now is, will Ron take some accountability internally and allow MM and team to have a crack at the conference next year with a bit of money, big club at that level, blah blah blah and back him.

Or will he fancy a spin on the management wheel and see what happens for a bounce and goals and all that ****e

A decent performance but unfortunately that’s nowhere near good enough at this stage of the season. We are completely devoid of any sort of goal threat. Dominated for the first half an hour yet didn’t really look like scoring apart from Ferguson’s free kick.

If we could add a goalscorer to this very solid defensive side we would easily stay up. But we can’t so we won’t.
Spot on

Same as Oldham, Salford, etc, etc...in isolation it's a point and that would be fine if the calendar read January 13th and not March 13th. Looking at the bigger picture it isn't good enough. I've been of the belief for a while now that MM is comforted by the number of games remaining and so he isn't feeling the need to push hard for three points. However, that's another game gone and we're looking like we're going to lose our league status. Does he feel the urgency to win games now and not try to draw our way to survival because that's clearly not going to happen? The severity of this situation is huge and I just want MM to show he recognises that fact with performances on the pitch rather than sleep walking into relegation as each week passes.

I actually thought the line up today suggested hes finally beginning to realise.

Generally, I've no problem with the line up today or in recent weeks tbh, it's what they're told to do once they cross the white line that concerns me. MM seems more concerned with not losing than trying to find a way to win. Almost to a man, supporters and pundits said this was a must win, yet the keeper wasn't tested in the second half. In fact, we had no pressure in their half, or even showed desire to try and keep the ball in their third, until injury time! Too little, too late and definitely nowhere near what we need in this relegation dogfight.

Oh miss those Bramble , Belgrave and Rawle league 2 days , poor at the back but at least we had a go in the final third

Absolutely, and this sums up how far we’ve fallen. Bramble and Rawle were better than any options we’ve got up front now.....
Not so sure about Belgrave though, I’m pretty sure his goal scoring record and ability was equivalent to Goodship!

A result that does very little to help our current situation or to give anybody confidence that we're going to turn this around. Another blank in front of goal means it's been 470 since that Ferguson banger at Forest Green. That's a horrific stat which for a team battling to save their football league status, it simply isn't acceptable. The worrying thing is, I can easily see it being extended by another 90 minutes next weekend. Despite not losing, we've still lost ground on Barrow and they have 3 games in hand over us. Just one win right now for them in one of those games in my opinion would be enough to all but condemn us to the National League for the first time. It's looking very bleak right now.

On the game, I actually thought for the first 20/25 minutes we looked good. We showed plenty of energy, plenty of fighting spirit and created a handful of chances but yet again we've failed to make any of them count. Akinola and Holmes should be doing a whole lot better with those chances at the back post and the save to deny Ferguson is frustrating as that lad will properly never make a better save as long as he players. After that though, everything we were doing good, we suddenly dropped back 10 yards, we couldn't string 2 passes together and Stevenage looked like the only team who would go on to win the game. It's the kind of performance/result that has me now really fearing the worst. I did however think that it was a good defensive performance but that alone isn't going to keep us in the football league.

Monty; 6- Didn't have a great deal to do. Looked comfortable when coming off his line.
Elvis; 6- Played okay
White; 7- Man of the Match. Commanded the backline as he always does. Solid performance.
Hobson; 6- Again, did nothing wrong and helped keep a clean sheet.
Hart; 5-Is this guy an imposter? Passing poor, no attacking threat. A shadow of the player we know.
Demi; 4-A walking yellow card. A player quite clearly on the decline.
Macca; 5- A walking yellow card. A player on a slower decline.
Ferguson; 6- We need more from him. A player to keep next season.
RHF; 6-Some good crosses in to the box. Put in a good shift.
Akinola; 5- Didn't look fit to me. Should have scored his chance as well.
Dieng; 6- Did okay out of position until he started to drop deeper and deeper.

Holmes; 5- Still looks off the pace. Missed a chance to win the game.
Goodship; 5- A 'striker' who doesn't want to be in the penalty area. Didn't notice him at all.
Mellis; 6- Didn't have long to show what he could do. Almost set up a winning goal though.

As it stands, I firmly believe we are going down. The question is, do we stick or twist with MM? Right now, we need results and we just aren't getting them. I accept that that isn't entirely MM fault, I very much doubt he has asked the players to go nearly 500 minutes of football since scoring for example but in football we all know that the buck quite often stops with the manager. I look at Burton who before they made a managerial change looked dead certs to get relegated to league two but since Jimmy Floyyd Hasslebank came in, they've gone on an amazing run and now look more than safe from the drop. On the other hand, you look at Port Vale who since paying compensation to Walsall for Darryl Clarke have dropped like a stone.. it's not a decision that is going to either guarantee us survival or the relegation but do we think it's a decision that needs making now?

Without stating the obvious, and I'm as frustrated as every other Blues Fan, surely someone in the management team can see the obvious, we can't score goals
2 out of the last 3 games should of produced 6pts instead of 2. Have the training ground goals been re-possessed? because I'm seriously starting to wonder

Felt very satisfied how we approached the game and the set up. Good first half hour. The long injury breaks seemed to break our continuity and flow.
We sat back for some reason 2nd half, maybe the wind played a part.
I felt the subs of goodship Mellis and particularly Holmes resulted in us playing deeper than ever. Goodship struts around a bit but just won't get in amongst the rough stuff in the box. Seems to prefer staying outside to pick up balls which isn't of use to us. Every time I noticed Holmes he seemed to just arriving as the ball was going the other way and it's almost like playing one short. Hopefully he can get up to speed because he seems to read the game Well and got himself in the right place at the end, but a yard to slow again. Don't know enough about Mellis yet.
RHF was the best I've seen him and unsure why subbed.
I guess when macca starts you know you are going to have to change formations during the game because he can't play a full game a week. Similar to Taylor who cannot play two games a week.
Well done the back 4 ...very strong again.
felt although ferguson s free kick was very good he was a bit pedestrian again. Can see how he was thought to be a little lazy at times before sufc. Still like him as a player though.
Thought we looked lots stronger down our flanks with RHF and JD protecting our backs and getting us wider going forward.
Modern football had a horrible obsession with making subs around the 60 min mark and now it's become worse with the 5 sub rules.
We sometimes seem to needlessly take players off which I'm not sure is a luxury currently affordable. I know we have players asking MM for game time but its becoming a bit of a predictable rotational conveyor belt. I prefer a settled formation and team whenever possible.
Id keep with the starting side we had today next saturday. They should feel confident after the first half today. A strong bench of mellis, taylor, possibly oli, Clifford possibly and aquah.
when oli is fully fit that would be my only change to the starters.
