Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-2 Torquay United

What a ******* of a result that is.

We didn’t play bad, but we didn’t play well either. Full of huff and puff but zero composure in the right areas. We can’t keep going on about injuries but we probably win that with Hyde instead of Cosgrave, who unfortunately doesn’t look like ever scoring. I actually don’t mind what he brings, but it should be as a sub when we’re winning games.

Lomas was very shaky at times today and it probably makes it easy now to chuck Lopata in next game.

I get we play with 3 CBs but I was disappointed we didn’t take one off when they went 2-0 up. You can change shape without changing principles of play. Okay we changed shape eventually but it was too late IMO. Not having a go but I do feel a more experienced manager would have been a bit more ballsy there.

Bridge was superb when he came on. Has to start.

Whilst I’m incredibly frustrated I’m not gonna be too critical. It did feel like “one of them games” but we can’t keep letting that happen. When it’s going well we look a real force. When it’s going against us we look a bit clueless at times.

Ultimately our finishing let us down big time today. We can’t knock their effort, and it’s still a refreshing change from what’s mainly been on offer for the last 4 years.

Let’s hope one of our injured trio of strikers is back soon
Wot he said. Saves me a match report so thank you very much @FarmdogSUFC.

Fonguck kept hold of the ball and bought other players into the game for the whole of the 95 minutes he was on the pitch. He's not a striker but he always kept the ball moving. I'd be interested to know what your definition of dire was in his performance.
Going forward he was ok at best - but defensively he leaves Miley with too much to do. Miley wasn’t at his best today, as Wes wasn’t putting himself about enough in order to help his midfield partner out.

Didn't create anything and had 3 chances to shoot in the 2nd half and chose not to.

Looking at it, Kacper should start in middle, with Hobson & Kensdale fighting for place on right side of back 3. Clifford must be dropped for Bridge at Wing back, as it’s took Bridge to come on to give us an real width as wing back. Playing back 3 don’t work if wing back not playing in advanced position to play as an extra striker if crosses come in toward them.

All of the above.

I like Kevs style of play he is trying to bring but at 2-0 down, surely you need a plan B.
Changing personnel and sticking with the same system doesn't often change anything.

Why are we not going two up top?

For me, Bridge was our best player which shows how poor we were for 64 minutes. We just didn't take a poor time wasting talentless side apart and we were so wasteful in possession. Bridge at least was getting the ball into dangerous areas but by then, they are parking the bus even more than they were in the 10th minute. Embarrassment of a team.

Torquay tried to bully us early on, as Boreham did, but pleasingly it was good to see us fighting back. However, that aside, we took too long to get the ball forward before Bridge came on.

A word on Colin, very concerned by his apparent lack of distribution. He's not ready for this level if he can't kick a ball or throw it beyond 5 yards. We desperately need Arnold back. Same with Ralph for Clifford and Kacper now must start.

Going forward, I don't know the answer to our strikers. Cosgrove isn't the answer and Wreh is an impact sub.

I like Mooney and Fonguck but both were extremely wasteful today, getting caught a lot in possession.

Thank God for Miley, who saved us with vital tackles in the middle.

We did deserve at least a draw, but got to take our chances.

Frustrating....

I agree that he is loathe to shoot and I would like him to let fly far more than he does, but to say that he didn't create anything is just not true in my opinion as he was putting Powell and then Bridge through into the 18 yard box regularly.

I actually thought we played really well and were incredibly unlucky there. Would love to see the xG for that game as I reckon it’ll show that we absolutely played them off the park. We’d have won that game very comfortably on another day. The score line flatters them enormously as I thought they were a really poor side.

Powell and Mooney ran them ragged and I thought Fonguck had a really good game. He didn’t stop driving forward with the ball and making things happen. Cosgrave looks useful but I don’t understand why he’s starting over Wreh at the moment. I think Wreh offers far more. Bridge made things happen when he came on too.

I can’t help but think though that Kev got the third sub wrong. I really wanted him to bring Lopata on. Even though Kensdale didn’t deserve to come off, I think it would’ve lifted the crowd to another level which might have paid dividends.

But all in all, a really frustrating afternoon and a game we could’ve easily won. Think it highlights how much were missing a bit more up front. Murphy is a goalscorer and a poacher about as good as they get at this level. I reckon he’d have had a hattrick today. No need to hit the panic button though. I thought it was a really solid performance and if the performance is right, the results will come. Don’t think comments of us showing no progress are remotely fair.

Lastly, most of the Torquay squad were pricks. Absolutely classless. Goading and winding up the east stand at the final whistle was embarrassing considering how ****e they were. Their number 10 with the big arse especially.
He boiled my **** today almost as much as the officials did. Was one of the worst culprits for kicking the ball away from the 10th minute. ****ing dog****. Looked like what you'd get if you ordered Marcus Rashford off Wish.

Missing too many big players. Having forked out for Lopata I doubt we can bring in anyone else. As others have pointed out the better teams in this league can regularly stick 2 or 3 past opponents especially the weaker ones. We never look like giving anyone a pasting.

Cool. If you are impressed by that mediocre performance, more power to you.

I agree that Bridge was great when he came on. The problem is he came on at 2-0 down and didn't really need to defend.

You could start him at wing back but he wouldn't be able to attack like he did today as he would have defensive duties.

Other than at wing back, who do you drop for Bridge?
