SOUTHEND United boss Phil Brown has slammed Stevenage for their treatment of Lee Barnard after it was confirmed the striker will be out for the next six weeks with an ankle injury.

I expect Barney was not too impressed by the treatment from PB. At least with Stevenage he got injured playing.

Oh well, at least it means we are more likely to look elsewhere than cling to the hope that, contrary to all evidence, Barnard is able to be a useful footballer once again.

The plan according to Brown was to send Barney to Stevenage to get "match fit", even though the player himself said he had had is best pre-season start for years. I dont dislike Brown but struggle to believe a word he comes up with much of the time. Lets not forget he said Barney would come good for us before promptly arranging his departure. It should not have come as a surprise to him that players get injured , but provides yet another excuse to blame the medics and his own failure to capture genuine strikers pre -season. Barnard is now unlikely to be match fit much before the end of February at best, so much for that plan then?. Next up, could be the continuance of the daft PB and OToole love in?, in the January transfer window, brought in as a goalscorer apparently, please NO, or should we hope the wondrous striker that is Weston brought in by Phil will knock in 15 in the remaining 23 games? Another Phil selection Coulthirst, the wunderkind striker, can he bang in 4 before the season ends? Sorry horrible bout of cynicism crept up on me.

after how loanees tend to end their spells here, this is really the pot calling the kettle...

I think that's a bit harsh - if you read the whole article Brown contrasts the way Stevenage handled Barney with the way we handled Sokolik's recent injury. The implication is that they failed to get proper external specialist advice, which was needed in Barney's case. I assume therefore that we got Sokolik dealt with properly after his injury.

The article is not about the fact that Barney returned injured, but that they didn't deal with the injury professionally enough.
