A picture of Stan Collymore in a Southend shirt caught my eye in The Times' football supplement yesterday.

It was a piece about how many clubs have transfer records that go back 20 plus years. And while this is correct for us, they got it totally wrong by saying the most we have ever paid for a player was £80k for Stanley back in 1993.

That's not even close. How many other players have cost us more than that? (And didn't we pay £150k for Stan anyway?) Marsh, Paynter, Foran and Poole to name just four right off the top of my head...

We paid more for Angell than Collymore too and that was a few years before. Terrible research.

You could (almost) forgive them if they were one out. But this isn't even remotely close.

In fact, you can't forgive them - the whole premise of that column is about surprising facts and figures. If any of them are wrong then there is literally no point.

Wasn't Harrold brought in for around the same amount as Paynter too?

By my reckoning we've signed the following in six figure transfer deals.

Derek Spence (swap valued at £111,111)
Brett Angell (£100,000)
Pat Scully (£100,000)
Andy Sussex (£100,000)
Keith Jones (£175,000)
Stan Collymore (£150,000)
Ricky Otto (£100,000)
Tommy Mooney (£100,000)
Jason Lee (£150,000)
Gary Poole (£350,000)
Dave Regis (swap, approx £150,000)
Keith ****ing Dublin (swap, approx £250,000)
Andy Thomson (£250,000)
Mike Marsh (£500,000)
Mike Lapper (£150,000)
Andy Rammell (£150,000)
Jeoron Boere (£250,000)
Drewe Broughton (technically we got him on a free, but the useless donkey cost us half a million with it's miss against Scarborough)
Peter Clarke (£400,000)
Billy Paynter (£150,000)
Richie Foran (£175,000)
Nicky Bailey (not sure what the actual fee was)
Alex Revell (£150,000)

Have I missed anyone out?

Wow, had bad is that. Where did they even get that information from. We even paid more for Alex Revell!

I reckon only 4 out of 22 (let's forget about Dr**e, please) were actually successes.

Some good players amongst the rest -and some not so good - but for one reason of the other it never quite worked out as I think intended.
