***Southend United Managerial Recruitment Latest***

This is amazing news, and it’s wonderful to be kept in the loop with these things.

@stan collymore I do have a question though. To a certain extent, we thought we were getting a new broom and a clean sweep when we appointed an up and coming, progressive, successful modern manager in Mark Molesley, and many back room staff. If I recall most fans on here were positive about the appointment, however he was seriously let down by being in transfer embargo’s, not being able to strengthen the squad, not being allowed to register his signings and not getting backing from Ron etc.

How do we know that this next new dawn won’t be scuppered by Rons terrible financial mismanagement of the club again?

Lets hope stan and the others get it right this time .The way its been set out looks good .Leys all hope it proves to be so . Its time for a new no for every supporter .Hate Ron or not to get behind what these people are trying to do .And the new manager / coach for the good of Southend UNITED .

I'm just thinking that once we've chosen a manager we should tell the others where they are in the queue much like when you're waiting on the phone for customer services. Something like:

"You're number 1 in the queue. Your wait time is approximately 2 months."

I'm 29 and I'm not shy to admit that reading this post brought a tear to my eye.

Stan, you coming in has been like a vet telling me that we don't have to put my dog down just yet and that there is a way to save them.

The last 2 years have been difficult for everyone regardless of what has been happening at Roots Hall. But add Southend to it all ... its been depressing!

So thank you Stan, for bringing us some hope.

Hopefully our new CEO will play a big part in improving decision making in those areas.

The structure will be manned by the best people, qualified across the board to make decisions that are in the best interests of the club and club alone, with a defined and clear vision of what Southend United is, wants to be and will be. This avoids the 3 points above.
SVC - tbf, over the last couple of years we've needed all the points we can get! :Winking:

NEW MAN mid table stabilise the club .Then push on next season .Thats the best we can hope for for now .

MM (famously) brought seven new people with him. Wasn't he just trying to do the same as this? His problem was that we are under a transfer embargo, he had to sell our strikers and Ron's poor timing meant he didn't get a pre-season. Unless this sort of mismanagement is cut out at Ron's end then it doesn't matter whether we have a talented management and coaching team because their efforts will be undermined at every turn.
MM wasn't employed by a CEO. Because there wasn't one. That was fixed for you.

Secondly it's not numbers, it's quality and due diligence that those 7 are of the quality that Southend United need. Those 7 including MM wouldn't have had the pleasure of 2-3 hours of being questioned on everything from philosophy to qualifications to "what would you do in these 15 scenarios by yours truly and 3 other men in a full due diligence process.

MM may not have made the 18 who (not telling you the final interview number) were whittled down in interview. So 7 employees wouldn't have strolled through the door simply because "they came with the manager".

Hope you can see from that illustration that it's not experience, numbers, qualifications or being a really nice human that makes a successful football club, it's identification of what the club wants, having a huge net of contemporary names to reel in, then you interview the ones who fit into your strategy using experienced industry professionals ( Stan Collymore -1500 games analysed, 15 year playing career, speaks to people across the pyramid daily + Tom Lawrence CEO who knows how they would fit in the business plan, costs of their potential employment +Gary Lockett, a supporter of 50 years+Ron, the owner) who argue over the final list, put strong arguments forward as to why they think as they do, then make a decision based on 4 people's input rather than one who may be told by Harry Redknapp "give him a go".

My methodology reduces as many ill thought out and impulsive decisions as it's possible to in football. The old methodology may find you be lucky once, maybe twice but will be hampered by 4-5 or 6 poor hires.

We won't completely eliminate losses, sacking even. But what we will do is have good people making good decisions which will mostly lead to growth rather than boom or bust which leads to fractures across a club and eventually financial issues.

That has ended.

This is total common sense: using the wisdom of several people with different but equally valid skill sets to make a decision using a proven structured process

Isn’t this what successful businesses do on a daily basis, why should it be any different within football?

As someone else quoted on here:”The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

Hopefully the scales are beginning to fall from certain eyes.

RM got lucky with the quality and longevity of Tilson, Luggy and Brown (1st time). Eventually the luck ran out - the approaches for managers with previous connections to the club or random "big names" (Campbell, Larsson, McCarthy) came across as desperate and out-of-touch with reality; RM's tiny book of contacts couldn't produce the goods; and RM's lack of ability/desire/time to do a proper due-diligence recruitment process began to tell.

...added to which, 'Arry in his ear spelled doom from the get go.
I give you Brandon Goodship, Bond, and Molesley, with jury out on Hobson, M'Lud!

Exactly this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

100% correct.

And that's essentially what football has been wrestling with for a decade or more now. Accepted norms in almost every industry on the planet have been slow to enter football simply because of the "He's a good player /manager/mate of" prevailing orthodoxy.

It doesn't work anymore! Clubs at our level and below, significantly below in some cases have structures that are well thought out, are relevant to their situation and can move and grow as they do, so why on earth would a club of our size, history with a 22k stadium to look forward to still be operating in the dark ages?

I see some on the forum who champion "all we need is sleeves rolled up and bottle" are suspiciously quiet again recently. Is that because they know that approach nearly saw their own club die? Are minds so closed to what's happening across football that bringing accountability, honesty, transparency, integrity to your club is less preferable than the shambles that's been allowed to take hold and fester? Really? And you can guarantee that a few lost games will see them back, emboldened, championing yet another messiah, another quick fix and another hit and hope.

Southend United has an opportunity to now do things in a professional way in line with other clubs who do and who are succeeding by doing so. That's it. Nothing more or less.

Supporters will be brought into the process to see WHY we make decisions we do, in order to learn how modern and progressive clubs work. If you can't see the process and thinking, why would you believe us! Show supporters will have every opportunity to see the work going on. That's the only way we change old thinking to new.

There are values that will always carry in any industry too. Honesty, clarity, humour, integrity and hard work. Those will all be core values of Southend United.

The football industry has changed and we need to change too.

Whatever method we use to identify new players they will likely be in demand by others as their virtues will have been noticed. This means there will be competition for the right signings. It is the belief of many posters our reputation is that of a club to avoid. If the Club has a bad name it will make things difficult, but, in football money talks. If we have the ability to pay above the going rate finding the right players should be an achievable goal.
If the money is not there the future will likely be more of the same ie as in recent seasons. There is no point in having a gold standard support structure if we can only attract or afford third rate players.

Having a gold STANdard support structure will help attract players and help change the reputation of the club. It may not happen overnight but will eventually bear fruit so long as we don’t reverse course at the first sign of trouble.
