Head Coach Kevin Maher says Blues need to score more goals to complement their excellent defensive record ahead of the visit of Yeovil Town on Saturday.

Despite being one of only four sides in the division to concede fewer than 10 goals, Maher’s men have only scored nine goals in the 10 games so far.

The boss said: “I’ll take 1-0 wins all day long, but we’d like to convert more chances as we’ve got decent options up front. We need to add goals around the pitch.”

Having kept clean sheets in the last two games, Blues have some momentum heading into two home games in four days, and Maher emphasised the importance of performances of Collin Andeng-Ndi in recent results.

“Collin’s done ever so well and the clean sheets are a team thing. He’s looked calm and composed, and he’s got good confidence in himself for a young player. We’ve been able to bring another one in, Blondy’s trained very well and that gives us good competition.”

“We’ve spoken about targets we want to hit in terms of clean sheets and goals. We expect everyone across the team to play their part defensively, whether that’s at set pieces or getting back behind the ball.”

Kacper Łopata has now started three games since returning to the club on a permanent basis, going off with cramp against Chesterfield and playing the full 90 minutes against both Wrexham and Wealdstone.

Maher said the defender is getting close to full fitness, and his presence adds extra competition for places in the backline.

“Kacper was behind when he first came in and we knew it was going to take a bit of time to get him to his top level. Defensively, we have decent options now with Louis [Lomas] as well and that forces the players that are in the team to be on their toes and perform.”

Noor Husin is another player who’s come back into the side recently, playing the last two. On the options in midfield now, Maher added: “Noor’s a good footballer. He can add goals to his game, Cav [Miley]’s got the ability to score one or two.

“Wes [Fonguck] has been unlucky to be out of the team because he played ever so well at the start of the season. Dan Mooney’s played inside a bit more recently, so we’ve got good options.”

Yeovil have only won once this season, but have drawn against the likes of Wrexham and Chesterfield. The Glovers haven’t lost away from home since the opening day of the season, and Maher knows it’ll be a difficult assignment.

He said: “I’ve watched a couple of their games and they’ve been unlucky not to get more points on the board, similar to ourselves.

“They played ever so well last week [against Boreham Wood] without getting the win. I’m sure they’ll be looking to put that right, so it’ll be a very tough one."

Expecting a tough test – Southend United boss Kevin Meher

Southend United boss Kevin Maher expects the Shrimpers to be ‘asked different questions’ against Yeovil Town at Roots Hall tomorrow.

Blues head into the game looking to secure back to back victories for the first time this season.

But Maher is expecting a difficult game with the Glovers.

“I’ve watched a couple of games and they’ve been unlucky not to get more points on board,” said Maher.

“They’ve been similar to ourselves in terms of who they’ve played and they’ve had some tough games.

“They played ever so well last week without getting the result and I’m sure they will be looking to put that right.

“It will be a very tough one.

“They will ask us some different questions and they’ve got some very good players who will cause us problems.

“But we’ve got to hopefully get on top of the game and make it about us.”

Blues, who won at Wealdstone on Saturday, go into the clash sitting 14th in the National League standings.

And Maher is looking to build on the determined display.

“We need to build on the performances and the couple of results we’ve had,” said Maher.

“We need to hit the levels we think we can hit and get a performance.

“We have to be ready going into Saturday for another tough game.”

However, the Shrimpers head into the clash having scored just nine goals in 10 outings, the third lowest in the division.

And Maher is keen for that tally to improve.

“The stats do tell a story,” said the Blues boss.

“I don’t mind winning 1-0 at all, I’d take that all day long but we’d like to convert more chances.

“We’ve got decent options up front but we need to add goals around the pitch as well.

“It’s up to midfielders to chip in as well and defenders too, set piece wise.

“But as long as we get results I’m not overly fussed.”

On loan Salford City striker Marcus Dackers has scored twice in three games since signing.

And Maher remains in talks to extend the forward’s spell with the Shrimpers.

“We’ve spoken to Salford and they’re happy,” said Maher.

“Marcus is happy as well so that’s with the people who do the paperwork now.

“Fingers crossed it’s something we’ll be able to do.

“I think he’s enjoying his time here and he’s been good for us.

"I think we’ve been good for him too.”

Decisions to make – Blues Boss Kevin Meher

Southend United will be missing five players for Saturday’s match with Yeovil Town at Roots Hall.

Goalkeeper Steve Arnold (back), midfielder Harry Taylor (knee) and strikers Rhys Murphy (knee) and Harry Cardwell (ankle) are all still sidelined along with defender Gus Scott-Morriss who serves a one match suspension.

But Maher confirmed the injured players are starting to make progress.

"We’ve got one or two back starting to do a little bit of training in terms of Harry Taylor and Harry Cardwell," said Maher.

"They’re a little way off still and it will take to build them up."

Maher also confirmed Murphy, who has been out of action since January, has returned to training but is not ready to feature for the first team at this stage.

And Blues are still looking to get to the bottom of Arnold’s back injury which has seen him miss the last seven matches.

“We’re waiting on the results of a scan and a couple of other things to see where that is,” said Maher.

“Hopefully we’ll have more news by tomorrow.”

Collin Andeng Ndi has started all of the matches since Arnold was forced out of action.

But the Blues youngster is now facing added competition from the on loan Blondy Nna Noukeu.

And Maher will be choosing between the two shot-stoppers on Saturday.

“Collin’s done ever so well and the clean sheets are a team thing," said Maher

"He’s looked calm and composed and he’s got good confidence in himself for a young player.

"We’ve been able to bring another one in and Blondy’s trained very well.

"That gives us good competition.”

However, Maher will be forced into at least one change as Scott-Morriss misses out with a one match ban following his red card at Wealdstone on Saturday.

Jason Demetriou is expected to replace him at right wing-back.

Southend United v Yeovil Town

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

The first of a quickfire double header of home games sees Blues host Yeovil Town at Roots Hall on Saturday.

After back-to-back clean sheets against Wrexham and Wealdstone, Kevin Maher’s men go in search of a first home win since August.

It’s the start of a busy month, as Southend have seven games scheduled, which could be eight should the FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie go to a replay.

Blues are also at home on Tuesday, against Woking, and three points against the Glovers could really spark some momentum for a run that could see the table looking very different come the end of October.

The opposition

Chris Hargreaves’ Yeovil are placed 19th heading into the game, drawing more games than anyone else in the National League.

They’ve already played three of the top four, and have avoided defeat against all of them. The Glovers drew 1-1 with Wrexham and Boreham Wood, and 2-2 with Chesterfield.

The Glovers’ solitary win came against Dagenham & Redbridge by a goal to nil, however they are one of only two teams to be beaten by Scunthorpe United this season.

Their three defeats were also by a single goal, and given the amount of closely-fought results Blues have had this season as well, everything points towards a tight and tense game.

Previous meetings

Last season was the first that Southend and Yeovil have been in the same division since 2009/10, with both games being home wins.

Jason Demetriou and Tom Clifford scored in a 2-1 Blues victory at Roots Hall, while the Glovers ran out 2-0 winners at Huish Park.

Overall, the two sides have met on 20 occasions, with 11 wins for Yeovil, six for Southend, and three draws.

Blues’ biggest win over Saturday’s opponents came in the 2005/05 season, with Luke Guttridge, Wayne Gray and Freddy Eastwood on the scoresheet in a 4-1 triumph.

From the boss

“I’ve watched a couple of their games and they’ve been unlucky not to get more points on the board, similar to ourselves,” said Maher.

“They played ever so well last week [against Boreham Wood] without getting the win. I’m sure they’ll be looking to put that right, so it’ll be a very tough one."

“We’ve spoken about targets we want to hit in terms of clean sheets and goals. We expect everyone across the team to play their part defensively, whether that’s at set pieces or getting back behind the ball.”

Blues team news

There are no new injury concerns for Blues.

Harry Taylor and Harry Cardwell have returned to training recently, while Rhys Murphy is back on the grass. Steve Arnold is awaiting the results of a scan.

Ref watch

The man in the middle is Sam Mulhall, who has refereed four National League matches so far this season.

He has shown 10 yellow cards and one red card, most recently officiating Dagenham & Redbridge’s 4-1 win over Altrincham.

This is Mulhall’s first season at this level. Last season, he took charge of 17 games in the sixth tier, including the play-off semi-final between Ebbsfleet United and Chippenham Town.

His assistants will be Marc Meeten and Aaron Conn, with the fourth official Jack Willmore.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online
here, in person at the ticket office or by calling 0344 477 0077.

Elsewhere in the National League

David Unsworth’s first home game in charge of Oldham sees the Latics host Wrexham, while table-topping Chesterfield welcome Maidenhead to The Technique Stadium.

Boreham Wood v Maidstone is the late kick-off on BT Sport, and the league’s two most porous defences meet when Dagenham & Redbridge host Dorking.

Chesterfield v Maidenhead United
Dorking Wanderers v Dagenham & Redbridge

Come On You Blues!
Quality Big Dady 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Ralph injury doesn't even raise an eyebrow these days.
I agree.
Why, oh why does it have to be one of our better players?
It's almost pointless saying you could see it coming - but I did, and all summer.
Ralph has been missing from various teams each of the last eight seasons.

I guess we'll see if bridge has improved as a LWB. Many fans calling for his involvement in this position

Maybe an alternative strategy today with a back four and 3 plus 3. Bridge is not a natural wing back or closer down, and Ralph is a BIG miss.
Best tactics will be to keep the ball and play in their half.
Whose lb in that formation, Kensdale?

I think Bridge at LWB is fine and it will mean we are playing 3 at the back rather than the 5 when Clifford is there, especially as Demi likes to provide attacking options. We should be on the front foot after a good couple of games and at home.
