Portsmouth

Kenny Jackett talks to Portsmouth OS before the trip to Roots Hall

It is a stage of the season that could prove pivotal for Pompey’s promotion hopes.

The next fortnight includes League One tests against Southend, Bristol Rovers, Barnsley and Bradford.

Throw in a Checkatrade Trophy trip to Bury with a Wembley place at stake and it is sure to be an exciting period.

And Kenny Jackett knows what his side need to do in order to make sure they keep competing on two fronts.

The Blues boss said: “Momentum and confidence are big things. They’re both hard-earned and can slip away from you.

“Wins are what we need and what we want – we’re not satisfied with draws and defeats and always want to do better.

“There has been a bit more fluency and more of a pattern in recent weeks and the side is starting to settle into an efficient unit again.

“We’re going in a vital couple of weeks now of five games in 15 days – starting with a really big test at Southend.

“It could be a season-defining period and we want to really get things going. You need a high points total if you want to go up automatically.

“Those sides that have success do well consistently, so where we know where the bar is and that’s what we’re aiming for.

“There are three sides that will get promoted this season and we want to be one of them – we’re certainly in the hunt.”

First up is a visit to Roots Hall to face a Southend side – in front of the Sky Sports cameras – currently in 14th position.

Jackett said: “We’re comfortable that we can beat the best in the division, but every side in the league will have their own reasons for wanting to do well.

“Southend have got a lot of very good players and an experienced manager, so they’ll be doing everything they can to win this game.

“While we know about their strengths and weaknesses, I’m more concerned that we play to our potential and that we can get the most out of our squad.”

Pompey will likely be missing Dion Donohue against Southend, but Jackett has no new injury concerns.

He said: “Dion probably won’t make it this weekend with his ankle, while we have Andy Cannon, Luke McGee and Jack Whatmough injured.

“Other than that we’ve got a clean bill of health, with everyone fit, available and looking forward to the weekend.”

Southend United

Chis Powell talks to Chris Phillips at the ECHO ahead of the game with Portsmouth

Southend United manager Chris Powell insists the Shrimpers have ‘everything to gain’ against Portsmouth tomorrow.

Blues face the high-flying Hampshire outfit in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Roots Hall this weekend.

And Powell is keen to see a reaction from his side following a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.

“Portsmouth are a much fancied side but they haven’t got the results they would’ve liked recently and in front of the Sky cameras anything can happen.”

Portsmouth are currently third in the League One standings but have triumphed in just one of their last eight outings.

Despite that, Kenny Jackett’s side are just one place and three points below the automatic promotion places.

But Powell is only concerned with making sure Blues get back to their best after their own inconsistent run of form.

“We have to worry about ourselves,” said Powell, who will again be without 12 players this weekend.

“We know how tough it’s been but we have to do what we can to change the story.

“We know when we’ve played the stronger sides it’s been hard for us.

“It’s been made harder by the lack of options but the players are good enough and have to believe they’re good enough too.

“They won’t need much motivation for a game against Portsmouth at home.

“But we have to make sure we’re in the game and we’ll have to go for it.

“We have to show we can be competitive.

“We have to make it difficult, show good discipline and show we aren’t easy to play against.”

We have to be switched on but be on the front foot too.”

The Shrimpers head into the clash sitting 14th in the standings, with just one win in their last seven games.

As a result, Powell’s side sit just six points above the relegation zone.

The Blues boss is expected to hand centre-back Michael Turner a recall in place of the injured John White this weekend while winger Michael Kightly is also pushing for a start after being on the bench at Doncaster.

Chis Powell talks to Southend United OS ahead of the game with Portsmouth

Chris Powell is asking his squad to ‘change the narrative’ when they come up against one of the top six sides.

Blues have struggled when facing sides at the top end of the table this season.

Powell alluded to it in his pre-match press conference but said he wants this weekend’s clash to buck that unwelcome trend.

“We have everything to gain,” said Powell. “We’re coming up against a side which are much fancied but haven’t got he results they would like recently.

“In front of the Sky cameras anything can happen and we know the atmosphere will be good, that’s for certain, so we need to go out there and do our best to put it in our favour.

“I know Kenny and he knows what the game is about and his squad certainly do. He’s got some good options. He’s fashioned a squad that are obviously trying to be in the top two, that’s their aim.

"We’ve got to worry about ourselves. We know how tough it has been.

“I think we‘ve got to do our best to change the narrative; change the story.

“When we’ve played the stronger sides it’s been hard for us, and it’s made harder by the lack of options.

“But the players are good enough and they have to believe they’re good enough.

“They don’t need much motivation to be up for a game against Portsmouth at home and we have to be in the game.

“We have to draw on a lot of energy. It’s tough in three game weeks, an early kick-off as well, but we need to be ready for it. Let’s go for it.”

So 442 . Time for Kightly to put in a decent performance in front of the cameras and prove his wage is not being wasted!
Come on fellow Shrimpers let’s get behind the team.

Like that team. Let's hope they can perform and are fired up for it.

COME ON SOUTHEND!

Dunkel oder weiss ?

Urgh, why is that fat prick Evans in the studio!

Hawkins and Bogle will be deadly! Lowe is another one to watch out for.

We need our many inconsistent players to step up and have a good game. We need to pass and keep the ball better. We need to defend and mark better at set pieces. Our most consistent player Taylor Moore will probably have another great game, I just hope he can cover for Turner when he gets caught for pace. I hope Elvis stays back a bit more as he's been losing the ball up the wing a lot lately. I thought Humphrys put in a real shift against Doncaster and was one of the few to come out with credit. Just need him to be fed.
