Sporting Occasions...

Matt the Shrimp

aka Harry Potter
It's Friday, so I'm being all whimsical and wondering... what are the sporting occasions that you would most like to see and attend around the world - or, even better, that you have seen?

Here's my list (in no particular order):

*Boxing Day Test, MCG (esp. Ashes)
*Test at Kingston Oval, Jamaica (again, if England involved)
*Test at Newlands, Cape Town (ditto)
*All Blacks v. Lions (or England), Carisbrook, Dunedin, NZ
*South Africa v. Lions (or England), King's Park, Durban, SA
*El Superclasico: River v. Boca, El Monumental, Buenos Aires
*Milan derby: AC v. Internazionale, San Siro, Milan
*Barca v. Real, Nou Camp, Barcelona
*Old Firm: Celtic v. Rangers, Parkhead, Glasgow
*An Istanbul derby - say Galatasaray v. Besiktas, Ali Sami Yen, Istanbul
*Yankees @ Red Sox, Fenway Park, Boston
*England v. Wales, Twickenham, London

That'll probably do for now. I haven't done any of the above, incidentally, but then there's many years left to check all of these out...

World heavyweight boxing clash in NY or Las Vegas
Ashes tour
With you on the Milan derby
Indy 500
England v Scotland at Hampden
LA Lakers home match

- Newlands cricket is a must for me. Definately a winter cricket tour to either OZ, New Zealand or South Africa. I'd love to do the whole Barmy Army thing. Ive seen Essex play South Africa (Gary Kirsten, Hansie Cronje era), Zimbabwe and New Zealand at Chelmsford. They were good games.
- Love to go to the World Cup finals in both Rugby and Football. Cricket ones, dont seem the same as the others.
- NNY v Cleaveland Indians
- Arsenal v Manchester United at Old Trafford, just for the atmosphere
- Celtic v Rangers at Parkhead

Still got to make up my mind about others tho

I would love to see Barca v Real at the Nou Camp, I caught a Barca game last season and even with "only" 50,000 fans the atmosphere is still something special.

I'm curious about seeing a superbowl or NFL game of some sort. One of my mates saw a College game and said even those get massive crowds and the game is an all day occasion with people turning up hours before the match to have picnics and beers in the carpark. Superbowl would be cool as the halftime show is an even in itself (especially if Janet Jacko gets her baps out)

borderline Sporting occasion I've like to see live is Wrestlemania, not too many will agree but I'm sure Beefy and Shrek will back me up on that!

I see Matt picked the Istanbul derby, using that logic you should have added Millwall v West Ham at the Den!

I'd love to see any World Cup in football, rugby or cricket. An event like that would be special wherever it is held. The Olympics as well.

Any England cricket tour, the European Championship in football and Lions tour in rugby would also be great.

However top of the pile must be England winning the Ashes at the MCG in front of 70,000 convicts.

My list

*Super Bowl
*World Cup Final
*Stanley Cup Final
*Denver Broncos vs. Oakland Raiders (NFL)

I am fortunate to have done one of these.  I was at the Pepsi Center in Denver for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals when the Colorado Avalanche defeated the New Jersey Devils. I would love to see a broncos vs. raiders game becuase it is one of the fiercest rivalries in american sports, and despite living in Denver my entire life I've never made it to this game.

If you're ever in the states i would suggest seeing a college football game. The atmosphere at these games is amazing and every team has its own traditions which make the game much more exciting. For example at my school, the University of Colorado, a buffalo leads the team onto the field, which really gets the crowd going. The best part is when it runs by the opposing team and you can see the terrified looks on their faces!

You should see what Col Ewe do at Layer Road when they lead a sheep out to the pitch. Now THAT really gets the crowd (if you can call it a crowd) going.

Did the HK Sevens last year and due to do them again this year. It's more of a social event than anything else but the vibe in the stadium is fantastic.

This should be one of the venues for the SUFC/Trust Pennant.

Been lucky enough to tick off quite a few big events over the last few years:

European Cup Final (Bayern v Valencia and Real vs Leverkusen)
UEFA Cup Final (Celtic vs Porto)
The Olympics (various events)
An NBA game at Madison Square Garden (Milwaukee at NY)
World Darts Final (Taylor vs Part)
A game at the Camp Nou - Barça vs Real Betis
British GP at Silverstone

Ones I have in my sights:

MCG Boxing Day Test
A Six Nations game
A Tour de France Stage
A GB rugby league international (England 'A' isn't quite the same!)
A provincial or All-Ireland hurling/football final
Super Bowl would be great, but what are the chances?

I'd need a time-machine of some sort.

Ali v. Lennox Lewis
Marciano v. Tyson (all at their peak)

then the winners meet at Roots Hall!

I've been at the Boxing Day test in Melbourne (1998) unfortunately it ****ed down all day, not a ball was bowled and all of a sudden 60,000 people had bugger all to do. Crown Casino didn't know what hit them when 30 legions of the Barmy Army arrived

I was fortunate enough to see the remaining 4 days, apart from the last hour or so, only problem being that the last hour was the best bit. I'd left to go out for dinner with friends with Australia 130-3 chasing 170 odd, to say I was a bit annoyed when I found out we had won our only test that winter, would be an understatement. I was also at Perth, Adelaide and Sydney (which is nearly as good as Melbourne, especially if you've spent New Year's Eve on a boat moored outside the Opera House).

WCS - if you ever get the chance, go. You will love it and have an amazing time.

I've also seen rugby at Newlands (Super 12 - WP v ACT).

One I agree with Napper - any World title fight in Vegas or Madison Square Garden
