Supporters Group News Statements and Protest Chat

That was an idea most thought would fail and it did in a rather spectacular manner with a first minute chant of we want Martin out.
Whilst I am pretty sure we all agree with the message in the chant it could have waited.

I’m going to share a few honest truths - that 10 minute silence was s**te and was never going to work with the majority of the fan base. It disadvantages the team and was never going to create the same media presence like the tennis balls.

The only good bit was when everyone was noisy - and that’s the key with the protests, no half measures but a full noisy, distributive protest.

We do not want to be silenced - we want to be heard and cause just enough of a disturbance that it gets the coverage it deserves to embarrass Martin.

Soft objects to be thrown on the pitch and fireworks set off outside the stadium behind the north bank will be the best move forwards.

Throwing objects on to the pitch is getting the club into dangerous territory with the league, complete madness imo, remember some people don’t have limits.

I have similarly protested against war, pit closures, hospital closures, and all sorts of other things, all of which went ahead. The only protest I can recall working was against the Poll Tax, which went eventually because Tory MPs thought they would loose their seats.

I am 100% supportive of protest, as long as people are aware that ultimately the answer (as was said in the film about Nixon called 'All the Presidents Men') is to 'follow the money'. A two minute segment on the local news is satisfying, but that is all.

Cynical - you bet, and I don't mean to denigrate anyone's efforts, just be realistic as to what you can achieve and make things as inclusive as possible. The Poll Tax protest worked because it involved people who were not disadvantaged as well as people who were. I know it is unfashionable to say this, but Tony Blair understood it - to help the poor you need to appeal to people who aren't poor.
Exactly this

I completely get this but what’s the point in the protest which isn’t going to have any effect.

The reason why we protest is because we want to raise awareness to our situation and ultimately get change in ownership - without causing distribution, the protests are pointless and if we’re going from history, protests within the rules have never amounted to change. As I said In my previous point ‘no half measures’.

If we start getting collar’d by the league then I agree we should re-evaluate, but the only successful protest we have had which received a shed load of media attention was the tennis balls.

Appreciate the reply H, I’m all for upping the anti mate but 1 beer bottle lands on the pitch from some cretin then what?just look at the empty’s on Shakespeare drive most games.

I mean it was one of the worst ideas thats ever been dreamt of so I'm glad to hear it didn't work out. Whoever came up with it / agreed it was any good needs their brain cell(s!?) testing let's be honest. The reason it got "double" the social media impressions or whatever you want to call it doesn't mean it was a positive idea I'm afraid. The tennis ball thing worked brilliantly as it was kept pretty low key and garnered some decent attraction.

Back to the drawing board...

I only meant your Tony Blair understood it line.
You have to appeal to those beyond your close friends and allies, build a coalition. TB was able to do that, he appealed to those who were not traditional Labour supporters as well as those who were.

In our case appeal to those who don't come to matches as well as those who do; people who are perhaps less committed or who have less time than others; build a sense of ownership and pride in our club across the City and wider region. Make the people of Southend 'own' the club and its current position (metaphorically not literally).

I won't quote any more politicians directly, but one said 'we are all in this together'. That of course turned out to be a lie - but the point still stands!
