Memory Lane Strikers in the 1990s- a ranking

That spell when Thomson and Jones were on fire at the end of season 94/95 under Steve Thompson , after Peter Taylor left us in a Relegation battle .....

Often wondered if Vic had offered him a decent contract early enough to stop him joining Murphy at Nott Co
That was one hell of a spell wasn't it. We won 8 of our last 12 games (including winning the last 4) and Gary Jones looked like a world beater.
I didn't want the season to end!
There were some memorable games in the sunshine in the final 2 months, including 3-1 victories against both Burnley and Barnsley.
The 4-2 home victory against Stoke under the Roots Hall lights was another cracker too.

Nice exercise Naps (are you bored?) but there are a couple of issues that either taint or enhance the opinions (subjectively, of course). For instance, Roy McDonough and David Crown played most of their time in the 80's, whilst Neil Tolson and of course Carruthers played into the 2000's.

I was amazed at Carruthers strike rate being 50%, one of our most prolific ever... across Crown's Southend career he comes in at about 54% and even Roy Hollis was spot on 50%.. Other prolific strikers, like Richard Cadette, Freddy Eastwood, Steve Phillips and Billy Best didn't hit the 50% mark. I'm amazed Carruthers isn't remembered with the same legend status as the others.

But very interesting though.

For comparison, my 90's top ten would be -

1 - Collymore
2 - Crown
3 - Benjamin
4 - Angell
5 - Thomson
6 - Jones
7 - Boere
8 - Rammell
9 - Carruthers
10 - Mooney
Carruthers was a one season wonder who benefits from the arbitrary dates cutting off his less prolific second season whereas Crown was a regular performer. That basically puts him in the same basket as Constantine.

My top 10 would be
  1. Collymore
  2. Benjamin
  3. Angell
  4. Crown
  5. Mooney
  6. Thomson
  7. Regis
  8. G. Jones
  9. Tolson
  10. Carruthers

Who was the striker who played in that spell who was involved in a shooting and it perhaps ended his career?

Some of the best players I’ve seen pull on the Southend shirt on that list. Thanks for putting this together. My top 5 favourites (not necessarily the best)

  1. Collymore
  2. Angel
  3. Crown (though technically an 80s player really)
  4. Benjamin
  5. Red card Roy (again more an 80s player).
Happy days they were.

There's some memories from those names although I started watching at RH in 1995 I missed out on some of the more prominent strikers such as Angell and Collymore but did have Andy Thomson as my first fave striker playing alongside Gary Jones and sometimes Keith Dublin was used as an emergency striker. I think that we had a young lad on loan from Arsenal Paul Read who I saw make his debut away to Birmingham on the Sunday Match on TV only to get injured after a few minutes, it would have been nice to see what he could have done. Tolson was amazing during Little's reign after the rubbish players that Alvin Martin used to sign. Sad that some of those strikers from the 90's are no longer alive though, I think there's at least 4? Aldridge, Boere, Campbell and Whyte.

Did Leon Constantine not play late 90s into 00s?

I'm sure Kevin Rapley scored more too

Steve Thompson really turned that season around in dramatic style. I thought we would go down and was disappointed when he went to NCFC.

I particularly recall how well Andy Sussex played in that short spell, it was a good time to be a Shrimper!

Changed the team to a 433 with battersby as lead striker. Made masisve difference. Maybe klopp was watching and took inspiration.

Agree or disagree? Any names I've missed? (Sure there's some!)
You've forgotten Keith Dublin.
