Post-Match Thread and Ratings Tamworth 1-1 Southend United

So a few weeks out for Parillon it seems.
I guess its the usual wait and see. Pennyfather said he was waving at the bench trying to get their attention. Then said it looks like it could be a groin , then corrected that to say it looks like a hamstring

Hopefully whichever it is the lads made a precautionary call, so with luck , a slight event

They were happy with the draw (keeper going down when they were under pressure - substituted players pulling out to the far side, before their number went up etc). That said, in the first half in particular, they looked sharper than us, and a tad hungrier.
Fortunately they lacked quality, and we got our act together after the break.
Our central defence now look rock solid but again we hardly troubled their keeper.
What got me was how rudderless we were. Ralph is not a captain (and was insipid today). In the days of say Timlin and Cox we would be bending the refs Earole at every contentious decision, the oppo did so (incessantly) but we were meek in comparison. Makes a difference in tight games.
Our fans were also strangely subdued today, not sure if it was because of the strung out layout of the away end, the realisation that this is it for some time yet, or maybe too many punchy beers in their super hostelries (that was my excuse anyway).

Can everyone please stop talking about making the bloody play offs now?!!! 😩
No. Last season some posters said the same. We were in an even worse position than now. Then we went on a 15 match unbeaten run, before losing to Rochdale. The bookies make us only 11/4 to finish top 7. So until we're about 8/1, I for one will still mention it.

In today's lesson of basic common sense, point one.

The size of the crowd particularly in non league directly correlates with the size of a teams budget.
Your patronising lesson in common sense lacks... guess what.... and falls apart on the very first point.

If that were the case, how do Forest Green, Barnet and Gateshead (plus others) have very decent budgets?

At our level, it's often about being bankrolled by very wealthy owners (like FGR), or bankrolled plus some great deals on transfers with sell-ons paying dividends (eg. Barnet).

There is also the fact that we're still mending a club left in financial ruin, it's infrastructure and dilapidated stadium after years and years of neglect with an eye on improving that stadium with costly redevelopment on the horizon.

We clearly don’t have the strength , certainly upfront, to consistently overwhelm teams
Our 5 strikers have possibly the worst record in the league, with just one of them to score every 13 games
Hardly promotion material
You’ve concluded that we need to get better players to beat part time Tamworth? As other have said, it’s likely that all our players earn more than any of theirs, and that nearly all of our players would get in their team? At what point do we expect more from the players and management team we have already. Roy Keane would say ‘do your job’.

I disagree it is only one side of the equation. The important factor is how much cash is left after income minus expenditure. Southend are not making money. If crowd size (or income) was the only factor football would be very boring. Although we would beat Col U every time.

The team budget helps obtain better players but it takes time to build a "better" team. Even then there are no guarantees.

Mixed emotions - for Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was unsure whether he should be pleased or disappointed with a 1-1 draw at Tamworth.

Maher was happy to avoid defeat at the Lamb Stadium after Gus Scott-Morriss netted a second half equaliser for the Shrimpers.

But Maher was also frustrated Blues did not go on to score a winner.

"I'm maybe disappointed we didn’t get all three points considering the second half and how much pressure we were putting on towards the end,” said Maher.

"But this is such a tough place to come and so many teams find it tough to come here and win.”

The Shrimpers were forced to come from behind to secure a share of the spoils after Kennedy Digie put Tamworth ahead after just nine minutes.

And Maher was angered by the manner of the Lambs’ goal.

"It was a sloppy goal from our point of view,” said Maher.

“It was a cheap foul and the second phase of a set piece which has ricocheted off the wall and we haven’t reacted quickly enough.”

But it was not just conceding the goal which disappointed Maher during the opening 45 minutes.

“In the first half I think we got caught up into their game a little bit,” said the Blues boss.

"There were too many turnovers from our point of view and we needed to shorten our game up a little bit.

"We needed to get it on the floor and play it quickly.

"We needed to play through the pitch a bit quicker and get into the right areas.

"We got in the final third but made the wrong decision too often.”

However, Maher was far more satisfied with the second half.

“I’m pleased with our reaction in the second half,” said Maher.

"We could have gone on and won it with the chances that we had or if one of the balls in the box had dropped to us."

But Blues ultimately had to settle for a point, thanks to Scott-Morriss’ 14th goal of the season.

And Maher was pleased with to see the wing-back finish off a fine counter-attack, which was started by a long clearance from Nick Hayes.

“We said to Nick if he got the ball in his hands to look for a forward quickly,” said Maher.

"Macca get on the end of it and it's a great weight of pass which allows Gus to shoot first time.

"Inevitably with Gus it ends up in the back of the net and he nearly had a second one as well from a similar error.

"We're really pleased with the goal in terms of how quickly we got to the other end."

Scott-Morriss now has three goals in his last four games for the Shrimpers and again earned praise from Maher.

"He's scoring all types of goals,” said Maher.

"He's a threat from set pieces and today he's gone from defending the near post of a throw to get up to the other end of the pitch so quickly which is brilliant, so too is the quality of the finish.

"To be able to keep it down and the find the bottom corner is the biggest thing.

"It's an incredible finish and I'm delighted.

Share of the spoils - for Southend United at Tamworth (Image: Andy Sumner)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt the Shrimpers showed their new-found team spirit in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Tamworth.

Blues came back from a goal down to secure a share of the spoils with Gus Scott-Morriss scoring a second-half equaliser.

And Maher was happy with the character on display.

"The team spirit is building and they're getting to know each other," said Maher.

"There are a lot of new bodies and the ones coming in are learning about the lads.

"They're all learning about each other and the team spirit is building, you can see that.

"Without that you don't do what we did in the second half today.

"Credit to them and I thought they all played their part.

"Leon (Parillon) showed in glimpses what he can do and there's so much potential there.

"There's lots to be pleased about so we'll take the point, keep building and keep pushing."

Same old Maher, get a bit of momentum then against the park teams ain’t got a clue how to pummel them , just set up for the safety net draw….and we’ve got this for at least another year as they haven’t quite grasped that this is not the man to take us back to the promised land!

Fair. We lost against part time Maidenhead (twice), and drew against part time Tamworth today. I could maybe accept one poor result against part timers on the law of averages, but if you want to challenge for the play offs, surely we need to win most of these games.

Tamworth seem to have gained an inflated status thanks to the Spurs result, but let’s be honest, they’re **** poor, relying solely on set pieces for any attacking threat. If we can’t beat them, then I worry any playoff push will fizzle out.
Forest Green and York could only draw at Tamworth, and Barnet only won 1-0. And..... Maidenhead beat Barnet 3-1.

It's a funny old game, Saint...

What I found particularly difficult about yesterday was seeing that Bromley v Harrogate was in a division above where we are.

How on earth did we get into this position I ask myself.

It's a funny old game indeed .........
