Thatcherism:Mark Two

Don't think much of the article, but William Keegan does have a luxurious looking moustache.

professes to not agree with the austere measures that set new labour up so nicely in 97.. then compares our current plight with 1932.. i think things were a tad worse back then .. then goes to say we are ok shredding money at pace paying people to do nothing or work in non jobs as our finances are only roughly as bad as everyone elses and we have a longer maturity on our debt so we can worry later then everyone else... thats ok then .. i like the bit saying the canadians are pony as they have very little debt and are currently hiking rates as their economy is growing nicely, thanks to them cutting their structual defecit in th elate 90's early 00's .. they are only ok cos the yanks went crazy on debt.. wouldnt want to be in their position oh no ..

Id agree with some of these except where you say the people have non job's . Our economy is made in teh private sectoe on non jobs , service industry , entertainment , financial services . Their are non jobs as reall they don;t make product, they are shet term consumables. Our social model is based on a set number of population that a fitted into various models of work . Its outdated and balancing on the abyess. It won;t be made better by making the our country more "competitive" as that mode is also out of date and was used to force the empires of UK , Spain France and Holland ... and everyone else who came after . We don;t need to keep expanding and consuming at the moment in evolutionary terms most of teh western culture is represented of teh idea of the Red Queen . running really fast doing many things but standing still.

Aha - I'd wondered where you got all this talk of 'double dips' from. :sherlock:

:offtopic:But talking of "double dips" there's a nice translation mistake(in the Spanish subtitles)of this term in the 1992 Sean Connery/Lorainne Bracco film Medicine Man.
Sean Connery's character talks of a trip to NY where he had a double dip in Central Park on a very hot day.The subtitles translate this as "Un bano de dos veces" which literally means two quick swims or a double dip in the water. As anybody who's been to Central Park knows, there's no swimming or boating lake there.Clearly Connery was talking about having a double dip icecream. The cultural significance of this clearly escaped the Spanish translator.;)

Surprisingly its probably because he has listened to cross part advice from old school MP (Clarke , Ashdown etc) , and appears to be doing what he believe is best inspite of his parties ideology.

Thanks for your kind words,Osy.As it happens I've always been a fan of Ken Clarke and Paddy Pantsdown(along with Vince Cable too-at least until fairly recently).

the service industry isnt a non job, it creates wealth.. insurance, banking, legal, music, films all big net exports for this country.. facebook is a 'non thing' but its has made its creator and the investors in it shedloads of lovely loot, which they can then spend of power boats and expensive hair cuts..

Missing teh point a little there , monetry value is a shared belief it has little tangable welath and those that make the idea up believe in it , our society is made of belief , added to service industry insurance all those other things you mentioned . Most of which are like fairy gold.
