Tilson waits

Southend Elvis

First XI
.... till after the world cup, to see who performs well .... in the bar drinking compititions. Come on Steve give us something more than just a keeper. I know we have time but other teams seem to be doing the business, are we gonna be left with the ones no one wants?

To some extent this was always going to be the case. Ourselves, Col Ewe, and a couple of other teams aside most of the clubs in this division will be paying upwards of double what we'll be offering. Birmingham, Southampton, Preston, Palace will be paying millions to sign premiership-quality players and will be paying salaries to match. We'll be fighting over the dis-enchanted, disappointed, remnants who hopefully will have their very best drawn out of them by Tilly and Brush, along with the desire to prove wrong those clubs that didn't want them....

Much like last year I suppose.

Keep the Faith.

Point taken, but I can't see us going for any ex prem players because of the wages. We need the big players from league 1 and 2 or Wenger like buys with potential the longer we wait the less available they become, or more expensive.... Col U have £650,000 to spend now....

Look how much Swansea spent last season compared to us and who won the title? Crystal Palace can shop at Harrods and Southend have to make do with a January sale at Primark. But whats in a label? I always thought that Vivian Westwood was a nutter but the trendies paid fortunes for her clothes that made the wearer appear like a colour-blind, unco-ordinated schizophrenic doing a plausible impression of a pantomime Dame. Stick with Primark. Covers your bits and bobs on a cold night and its better to be serviceable and cheap than expensive and crap. I said when we went up to Lg 1 that the step up was marginal and I believe that the Championship is barely better than Lg 1 except for maybe seven sides. We only have to do better than three other teams and of that I am supremely confident. Bye-Bye Col U.

I've got to disagree with that.

I would say there may be 7 sides that are marginally better than league 1 but the rest are a different proposition. However, if they take us lightly, as most of league 1 did in the first half of the year, then we can beat a lot of them.

Couldn't agree more Rab. It's not particularly the ammount spent on a player but the managerial ability to get the best out of that player. Something Tilly n Brush have proved they are more than capable of doing.

No doubt in the the top flight of the Premshyte mega money spent on players significantly increases your chances of success but in the CCC, and especially for a club like ours, the right players combined with a manager that knows what he's doing can bring success on the field that other teams pay millions for.

Splashing the cash on high profile established players doesn't always bring success. Swansea & Leeds imediately spring to mind.

Second season where everyone appears to be pannicking. Steve Tilson and Paul Brush have the ability to pick up the players they want and will only do so to strengthen the squad otherwise they wouldn't certainly have considered letting Mark Bentley go. You have to remember that last year we were spurned by both Luke Beckett and Chris Greenacre, and everyone thought we were doomed. Our managerial pairing is second to none, and I feel comparable to anyone in the division, and they will not panic buy. I have every faith that come July/August our squad will be better than ever, and lets remember that the majority of the squad we already have are easily capable of making their mark in the Championship. Just sit back and wait, I'm sure everyone will be happy come the start of the season.

I don't know where I suggested we should spend big, I feel we should have got a couple of new faces in before 1. we offload players 2. get in before anyone else..... I do have faith I just think its a gamble leaving it late.

I'm concerned we're releasing players without replacements. Greenacre and Beckett turned us down last year for bigger clubs and who's to say the same won't happen this year. I don't think we need to spend big though, we've been promoted twice and have hardly spent anything, whats to say we can't do it again

Any players who turn us down look like an plank, most of players soon know that Tilson is one of the best manager outside the Premiership & now they see Southend as an club who can help the player to improve themselve, like Luke & Freddy.

Greenacre and Beckett thought Tranmere & Oldham got better chance of winning promotion than Southend, but they make the wrong choice.

Not quite, but I see your point. Not many players look like MtS

Spot on. We may not have millions to spend, but we have one of the best management duos in the country. I wouldn't swap them for Wenger, Mourinho or anyone else.

With Tilly & Brush, anything is possible. We'll be fine next season.

P.S. Sod off Spiff - if anyone is the quintessential 4x2, it's you...

They are professionals and they probably earned more money by making the choices that they made. I doubt either of them are crying themselves to sleep over the fact that they didn't move to Southend.

I guess we won't know til next season. From what I can see theres half a dozen sides (NOTE - not "clubs") in this division that are in a different league to us.

11 vs 11, I don't think theres many teams in The Championship who are significantly better than we are so that we couldn't compete.

There is still 2 months before the season starts mate!

the other thing is tilly has been stiched up in the past mentioning his targets - i very much doubt we'll hear anything until players are down at the hall posing for that shot in the exec boxes with a pen in hand!
and for all we do know there could be 7 or 8 like that on verge of fufilling their dreams and playing on the hallowed turf!
