Which as stated are hideous to look at and dont really engage .

Now i have Dyslexia but can read very well , but my intrest was sparked by .. comics . Insainly cheaper , more gripping and more engaging to your average 9 year old (plus easierly replaceable and recyclable)
 
Agree with you Osy, my initial interest in reading was through comics, but graduated quickly to books like Treasure Island & Kidnapped, which gave me a lifetime love of reading.

I realise it's personal opinion, but I can never understand people who proudly state they have never read a book in their life.

That is the scarest part , you start to develope an understaning of alternate ideas and cultures when you read .
I stuck with comics as well mind ;)
