Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation Transfer Thread - Summer 2025 Edition.

Transfer news
Personally I’d take Cardwell back in a heartbeat but agree on the points about fitting in with the wage structure and I think that’s probably what would prohibit the move.

He already knows the way we play, knows a lot of the players and what is expected of him. We also know he’s capable of scoring regularly. But we also know he’s had problems in the past with staying fit - so do we want to break the bank for someone who might spend spells on the sidelines. I haven’t looked at how available he was for Forest Green last season and I’m aware he played most games in his final season for us. But certainly prior to that, the feeling was he was a bit injury prone.

I love what Macauley Bonne brings to the side and I do think he was becoming a real weapon off the bench at the back end of the season. But I can’t personally see him improving enough to be one of 2/3 regular starters week in week out. If Cardwell signed, he’d probably start every week alongside Kendall.

It’s an interesting dilemma but it might be that Option C (another player) is the best bet. We’ll have to wait and see I guess.

A loan deal may take the brunt of the wage issue

I’m with the thinking that Bonne is more of an asset than Cardwell. I think Cardwell had one exceptional season. Bonne can be played in a few different positions and seems to be an option down the right if Kev wants to switch to 3 up top. He’s a confidence player so if he gets on a roll I’m still convinced he can contribute more goals. But .. not sure he’ll stay.

Nothing more frustrating than people keep suggesting ex-players. Cardwell made his bed now he can lay in it he followed the money (i understand that). I get most people only watch us and their knowledge may not be great of other players out there but if we only signed ex-players we would never move forward.
I think that's a bit of a broad statement to make about all suggestions mentioned. None of us would grumble if Golding came back. Of course, linking former players just for the sake of it is pointless, however, that isn't true of every suggestion.

The fact is, Kev never wanted him to leave and we've looked lost up front as a unit without him. Pepple was great but he was a totally different player and very individual. Whilst he was playing, everyone was saying that the ball wasn't sticking up front and that we were conceding from set pieces a lot. This only changed for the better when Hopper came in. Cardwell did those jobs even better than Hopper did, and he scored goals too. I still haven't seen a player at this level that can do a multitude of jobs in one go better than Cardwell did. I'm not saying he's the only player out there, of course he isn't. But it is going to be very hard to find another one without spending a load of money.

If we are to be serious promotion contenders, we need to sort both ends. We don't score anywhere near enough and probably ship a few too many as well.

11 teams scored more than us and 5 teams conceded less than us last season.
I think focus is heavy on the 2 ends of the pitch that the middle seem to be getting a free ride. They can really assist in both area but don't seem to. We are expecting the forwards to conjure magic but it's rare a striker can do it alone. We expect our defence and keeper to do better but they are not well enough protected by the midfield. I feel we need to strengthen in ALL areas if we want to serious have a tilt at the title.

Target man wise we already have Hopper, Bonne can also do that role if needed, and Spasov is supposed to be a similar profile as well, isn’t he? I still think we need a striker, but I’d say that Cardwell role is already filled. What we need is the person to go alongside them, Kendall can do it and Walker has done it up to now but an upgrade on him would be good. That role isn’t Cardwell.
I wouldn’t particularly be pursuing Cardwell and don’t think he’d match his 23/24 goals total but he’d be an upgrade over Hopper and the un-signed Bonne as a targetman and it wouldn’t be close. For a start he’d get to so many more balls than they would.

Would be interesting to know how much more wages Cards would need compared to what Bonne was on.

He would only get to them if fit and he likes an injury. Funds are limited and Bonne is likely to play more games over a season.

Fwiw I'd rather keep bonne and release walker.

We definitely a left winger/wingback, center half and attacking or pacey right midfielder.

I don't think FGR will be as far up there this season as you may think

They were always going to have to cut a chunk of their budget from what i've heard from a FGR friend of mine . Therefore, i think they will need to keep cards as an important member of the squard

Couple of interesting signings at Worthing confirmed:

Harry Ransom - 6' 2" CB age 25 from Sutton. Previous clubs include Dover and Crawley Town. can also play in midfield.

Nathan Odonkonyero - 6' 1" pacy striker age 22 - from Ebbsfleet, good goal scoring history at lower levels, but last season he was hampered by suffering a leg fracture.

Although these are positions we may be looking at, both may be worth keeping tabs on.

Odonkonyero, age right and still young enough to push on, will be interesting to see his goal return in a comeback season from a serious injury, but has maintained his pace by all accounts, which is a major asset in his game.
