Unsung heroes

Being slightly cynical, I know they employ some professional fund raisers, as do many other large charities. I know that's not who you mean in this case.

Thats you kay you know so much when at the same time you know so little.I meant the pro fund raisers, yes god forbid they get paid to raise money to ease the suffering of children that are due to die.A job i couldnt do as the rench of seeing or coming into contact with the poors innocent kids would be to much for me,un-sung heros.

Tony, give over, the ordinary people that raise funds off their own backs are of course, a shining example to us all, and in particular those who act on their deceased loved one's wishes and make often very healthy bequests or request donations. I'm not belittling them, I don't know why you would think I am. I'm just not so sure professional fundraisers actually have much day to day contact with the children or indeed their families.

Of course kay as always you are spot on the money,im very sorry for thinking the thoughts i thought.
Of course people who are paid to keep places like little havens open so that dying kids cand die in some shall we say comfort are not worthy of praise, best just let places like little havens close eh.
Go back over some of the other offers for un-sung hero, the chap that worked on the code breaker was paid to do so.
The sherpa bloke was paid, social workers are paid.

I know a few 'pro' fund raisers for various charities, and I cannot have more respect for them. Obviously people who raise money off their own back is great and having been involved in some fundraising recently it is very rewarding on a personal level.

However, during the week I go to my relatively well paid job and can pick and chose when I want to be benevolent. The 'pro' fundraisers get paid very little and are usually doing it because they want to devote their career to helping rather than for monetary rewards. To give up greater earnings potential to be 'pro' fundraisers is a pretty massive sacrifice.

Ok, maybe I'm a bit biased, but "unsung" heroes implies to me people that are doing whatever they're doing voluntarily or, if in employment, beyond the call of duty. Surely if you're getting paid for it then you are not normally "unsung" because -as in most places in this day and age - you are subject to meeting targets and performance related initiatives.

Now, if you wanted to mention all those medical people who rushed to help the victims of the London bomboings, that I would understand as it's "beyond the call of duty", even the emergency services who dealt with it all. Yes, they may have been trained for it, but it's something they would have hoped never to have to do.

Question about voluntary work.

I was thinking, now the kids are grown up, and the usual christmas problems of who shal we have dinner with etc, maybe its time to spend Christmas Day helping someone less fortunate, but i have got absolutely no idea what can be done and who for.

Can anyone give me any pointers of who to get in touch with.

Think there's some on here who've done that so hopefully they'll contact you, if not then I'd try Shelter or just local Social Services.

Can we get Old Blue Lady to vet all nominations for unsung heroes to make sure that they are worthy? Cos I certainly can't figure out what crazy-assed criteria she applies to work it out...

No dig at any rock stars intended but id put forward any one that works with or helps abuse victems(paid or not),i would find it hard to cope with on a mental level.
I met someone once who had to view the porn piccys as a job(police) and he told me that they could only do the job for 6 months at a time due to the horrific pics they saw.
As for firestorms nomination of social workers,i just fail to see how they can not at times bring the work home with them, some of the horrors they hear/see must be the lowest of the low, hats off to them.

I'd also like to nominate the Page 3 photographer Beverly Goodway. Every day he brings a little sunshine in thousands' of peoples' hearts.

Hey Chaps!

I collected a considerable amount of money for a childrens ward a while back. The smiles on their faces when I told them how much i'd raised gave me almost as big a buzz as I get from sniffing glue..

Unfortunately, their smiles quickly turned to frowns when they realised I'd blown it all on beer and smokes.

In my defence, I did perform a drunken sexy dance for them all by way of recompense, although I have to say, it wasn't well received. Ungrateful *******s.

Toodle Pip!
