What happened to Southend

It's lost much of it's character and charm if those pics are anything to go by. Look at the locally owned shops and little arcades - to be replaced by homegenised shopping centres with big brands that can be found in every other town centre in Britain.

Agreed, there are some great shots on there, not least the old Guinness clock and the original Garons.

Can anybody tell me why that statue was taken down? I looks superb!

You mean Queen Victoria Scott? She was put up in recognition of her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and I'm not sure if this was the only reason, but even back in the day there were people about who thought it was hilarious to keep breaking her hand off, so she was moved to a more unobtrusive spot along the Cliffs in 1962.

Southend-on-Sea.—On Queen Victoria's
79th birthday, 24 May, 1898, a statue of her
Majesty, presented to the town by Alderman
Tolhurst (Mayor in 1897), was unveiled by
Lady Rayleigh. It is the work of the late
Mr. J. W. Swynnerton, and represents the
Queen seated, and with right arm outstretched,
pointing towards the sea. The
position is an ideal one, in the centre of the
Pier Hill. The inscriptions are :—
[Front.]
Victoria
Begina et Imperatrix.
[Back.]
This statue of
Queen Victoria
was presented to the Borough
of
Southend-on-Sea
by
Bernard Wilshire Tolhurst, Mayor
in commemoration of Her Majesty's Glorious
and Beneficent Reign 1897

This is Roots Hall which stood on the current site of Southend United Football Club.

Some great photo's on here. It's funny to see what it was like, and shows you what a **** up the council made in the 60s and 70s with its planning policy.

HaHa town planners doing what the Luftwaffe didnt . the replacement of Vic circus and the Hotel there with that piece of **** Barclays building.. Who ever allowed that should be hanged in front of it..
