Quote[/b] (Matt the Shrimp @ June 15 2004,11:23)]1. Hmm, not that subjective. Just about every poll I've ever seen rates that goal as the best one ever scored at the World Cup. Other contenders include:
*Owen's goal for England against Argentina, France '98
*Owairan's goal for Saudi Arabia (!) against... Nigeria (?), France '98
*Bergkamp's goal for Holland against Argentina, France '98
*Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil against Italy, Mexico '70
*Socrates goal for Brazil against USSR (?), Spain '82
*Baggio's goal for Italy against Czechoslovakia (?), Italia '90
*Charlton's 2nd goal for England against Portugal, England '66
Can't think of any more right now. But Maradona's is consistently voted as #1... the best ever. You may not like that. But that's how it is.
2. The ordinary men in the street (and that's what Maradona was, and more crucially whom he represented, being a Boca man) did not start the war; the corrupt right-wing military dictatorship which ruled the country started the war. So yours isn't really a valid point. The people were hurting, and so the chance to get back at one of their oppressors, the English, was one they pursued with relish.
Besides, as that Norwegian commentator ("Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Winston Churchill... etc.") amply demonstrated,
everyone loves beating England. We're seen as arrogant imperialists, and crucially, we gave the game of football (in its current state) to the world. So everyone loves to beat us...
c'est la vie.
3. Other than your inability to forgive him, and the fact that it's spelt "Buenos"... agreed.
