Who is your most hated player ever

Why? We can't list everyone who has the nerve to score against England. Zidane is a legend, my favourite current player.

Wish he'd had a mare last night mind.....

Yeah, what a b@stard he was to his nation when he single-handedly took an average-to-good side to victory in the 1986 World Cup, and then took a poor side to the final in the 1990 World Cup...

People need to get over the Hand of God incident...

*It was 18 years ago
*We've beaten the Argies since then
*If that had been John Barnes who had done that, he would have been labelled as "impudent" or "inventive".

and, most importantly:

*His second goal, frankly, means I forgive him for all misdemeanours before or since.  It is, quite simply, the finest indivdual goal scored on the world stage - a moment of genius which will outlive him and us.  That goal is the essence of football, distilled in a man... skill, control, power, accuracy, freedom, joy.

And if you can't appreciate that, then you'd better head back to your cave.  Like Beamon's jump in Mexico in 1968, the first time Michael Jordan discovered he could fly, Michael Johnson's 200m in Atlanta, Owen's goal against the Argies in 1998... some moments transcend sport, nationality, previous disagreements.

Maradona's goal is one such moment... perhaps the quintessential version of such a moment.

And that's why people should get over the whole Hand of God issue.

Matt
Sorry, I can't get over it. So he scored a good goal..... big deal!

He's always been a ****. He hated the English and most of us loathe him back, with interest.

I hope he keeps on hoovering up the sniff & shovelling in the burgers until his little, black heart goes pop....! Fat Argy pikey *******.

No offence MtS but I'm clearly not a fan.

1. Pah!  Damned with faint praise!  It wasn't a "good goal", Wessex - it was the best goal ever scored at the World Cup.  It's like calling Jesse Owens a "reasonable athlete"... come on!!!

2. So?  In the footballing context, there was always a mutual loathing (e.g. 1966, QF, Alf Ramsey came on to the pitch to stop them swapping shirts).  In the political context, as the vanquished nation in a war, the Argies had extra reason to hate us in 1986 - the first World Cup after the war had been won by the UK.

In that context, you can't blame him for not liking us, can you?

3. And, as much as I may dislike someone, I can't think that I've ever wanted to see someone dead... surely that's a step too far?

In fairness the straight answer to the simple question is YES.

Of course the answer is yes, it's a free country. But Zidane would still be a daft answer.

By the way, I'm with Matt 100% re Maradona. Greatest player of my lifetime, a footballing genius.

Matt in response to your post -

1.) That's subjective, I'm sure there's been loads of better goals, I'm just struggling to remember one at the mo.

2.) They started the war so it's their own fault that they lost it and had to suffer wounded pride.

3.) Perhaps I'm being a tad harsh, but this is a post about your most hated player. I'll accept that he had sublime skill, but......... he's a fat, obnoxious, opinionated, cheating, pikey soapdodger from Beunos Aires so I can't forgive him his crimes.
wink.gif

I can think of better goals in the World Cup: Saeed Owairan against Belgium when he took it from the halfway line in 94, Pele's second in 58 against Sweden, Jairzinho's against England in 70, Edmilson's against Costa Rica in 2002, Gemmil against Holland in 78, Oh, and Bobby Charlton's v Mexico.

1. Hmm, not that subjective.  Just about every poll I've ever seen rates that goal as the best one ever scored at the World Cup.  Other contenders include:

*Owen's goal for England against Argentina, France '98
*Owairan's goal for Saudi Arabia (!) against... Nigeria (?), France '98
*Bergkamp's goal for Holland against Argentina, France '98
*Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil against Italy, Mexico '70
*Socrates goal for Brazil against USSR (?), Spain '82
*Baggio's goal for Italy against Czechoslovakia (?), Italia '90
*Charlton's 2nd goal for England against Portugal, England '66

Can't think of any more right now.  But Maradona's is consistently voted as #1... the best ever.  You may not like that.  But that's how it is.

2. The ordinary men in the street (and that's what Maradona was, and more crucially whom he represented, being a Boca man) did not start the war; the corrupt right-wing military dictatorship which ruled the country started the war.  So yours isn't really a valid point.  The people were hurting, and so the chance to get back at one of their oppressors, the English, was one they pursued with relish.

Besides, as that Norwegian commentator ("Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Winston Churchill... etc.") amply demonstrated, everyone loves beating England.  We're seen as arrogant imperialists, and crucially, we gave the game of football (in its current state) to the world.  So everyone loves to beat us... c'est la vie.

3. Other than your inability to forgive him, and the fact that it's spelt "Buenos"... agreed.

Best ever World Cup goal was in France 98, when that Moroccan geezer lobbed Jim Leighton to put the seal on a 3-0 win against Scotland. Have. It.

Letchkov's against Germany was pretty special too

MtS,

Yes Maradona was gifted (one of the most gifter players ever). He made Napoli into a top team in Italy (look where they are now)...

... but face it, some love hate the fat Argy... including me. It's simple.

1.) Archie Gemmill for me. Fatty soapdodgers goal was ok, nothing special...!
tounge.gif

2.) Your point is invalid. The Argies were evil imperialists who attempted to conquer the plucky Falklanders. We were the good guys who liberated our Falklands brothers. As for being oppressors, I think you'll find that the Argie Junta used to take it's citizens for one way helicopter rides out into the S. Atlantic. Clearly the Argies were too stupid to work out who their real enemies were.

As for your other point, the rest of the world are just anti English xenophobes & racists. They should be generous after all that we've done for them...!
