Managers Pre-match Views

Wycombe Wanderers

200302122.jpg.gallery.jpg
Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth above did not do any prematch interviews so we have no idea what he is thinking or planning

But Chris Phillips of the ECHO managed to track down Jamie Cameron a Wycombe Wanderers supporter to get his views ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Adams Park.

What have you made of Wycombe’s start to the season?

“It’s been an excellent start to the season, two wins and two draws and we were arguably unlucky not to win at Fleetwood on Tuesday.

"The situation was looking dire at some points in the summer but a new-look ownership structure and 10 new signings have inspired a feel-good factor around Adams Park.”

What are the hopes for Wycombe this season?

“The club have been gradually building every season since Gareth Ainsworth took charge and, after we stayed up in the third tier for the first time since 2003 last year, ambitions are simply to improve on that.

"The squad is the best we’ve had under Ainsworth, so a top-half finish isn’t completely unrealistic.”

What have been the main reasons for the good start?

“Wycombe have been known in recent years for their very small squad sizes, but 24 players has allowed for strength in depth across most areas.

"This helped against Fleetwood, where several changes didn’t affect the level of performance and we went toe-to-toe with a side I think will be there or thereabouts.”

Who would you say is the dangerman?

“Without a doubt, Fred Onyedinma.

"He first signed for the club in 2014 on loan from Millwall and scored 10 goals in half a season.

"Another temporary spell last year provided plenty of special moments and an alleged fall-out with Neil Harris meant that he returned to Bucks for good this summer, where he has carried on where he left off.”

What’s the team news?

“We tend not to give too much away regarding injuries but Jack Grimmer, Curtis Thompson, Sido Jombati and Adam El-Abd were all unavailable in midweek.”

Kevin Bond talks to the Southend United OS before travelling to Wycombe Wanderers

Kevin Bond.jpg
Kevin Bond conducting his Southend United team from the touchline

Southend manager Kevin Bond says his side need to improve in both penalty areas in order to register their first points of the season.

Bond was speaking on Thursday before the weekend’s trip to Adams Park and a game against unbeaten Wycombe Wanderers.

After seeing an improved performance on Tuesday night, although one which didn’t yield the desired result, Bond says Blues need to start taking chances and be more ruthless in defence.

He also believes the style of play his side are looking to play can take time from where the squad were when he joined.

"The problem is there for all to see really; it’s both boxes," said Bond.

"The most important elements of the game is scoring chances, creating chances and stopping goals at the other end. Those are the key areas for us and we need to do better in both boxes.

"We’re trying to introduce what I would say is a better style of football that enables us to keep the ball better, because we weren’t able to do that last season.

"We’ve been able to keep the ball better at times, nothing like the Southend that I came into last year.

"My thinking is it does take time but while it does take time I completely understand you’ve got to get results to give you that time. No one knows that better than I do.

"We’re still finding out about each other because we’re introducing new players, we’re still finding out what works best for us but we’re trying to bring in a style of football that is both pleasing on the eye and at the end of the day has to be effective."

Wycombe have won two and drawn two in their opening four games.

And Bond identified this weekend’s opponents as a hard-working side that will need to be matched.

"We say it every week. It’s vitally important that we get our season underway, and we all understand that, nobody more so than myself,” he added.

"The next game is the only game we can do that with.

"Wycombe have had a terrific start to the season, they’ve got a fantastic work ethic and their manager has done a fantastic job with them.

"They never leave anything out there and they fight to the end, pick up late goals which they have done already this season. That’s fantastic for spirit so it’ll be a tough game for us, but I hope it will be a tough game for them too.

"We realise it will be a really difficult game and anything we are to get there on Saturday we will have to earn."

Expecting a tough test - Southend United manager Kevin Bond

Southend United boss Kevin Bond knows Wycombe Wanderers will be dangerous opponents

Southend United manager Kevin Bond is bracing himself for a tricky test at in-form Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow.

The Chairboys have taken eight points from their first four games of the League One season.

And Bond feels Gareth Ainsworth’s side will be tough to beat this weekend.

“Wycombe have had a tremendous start to the season and they have a fantastic work ethic,” said Bond.

“They’re really, really together and the manager has done a wonderful job with them.

“This will be a really, really difficult game and we will have to earn anything we get there.”

Wycombe are currently fourth in the standings and Bond feels the Chairboys’ spirit makes them dangerous opponents.

“They never leave anything out there, they give everything and fight until the end,” said Bond.

“They pick up late goals and it’s fantastic for spirit.

“It will be a tough game for us but I hope it’s a tough game for them too.

“They’ve had a go in the transfer market too so it’s not like the Wycombe of old and they are a really decent outfit.”

The Big Preview

Wycombe Wanderers vs Southend United

Big Preview.jpg
Overview

Southend United head to Adams Park tomorrow afternoon to take on Wycombe Wanderers with Blues desperately looking for their first points of the season.

Kevin Bond’s side will no doubt take a repeat of Southend’s last visit to High Wycombe as goals from Theo Robinson, Tom Hopper and Simon Cox helped Blues to a 3-2 win.

But the Chairboys may be a tougher nut to crack this time around having made an unbeaten start to the season, something they certainly won’t want to be giving away easily.

Form

Blues have had a miserable start to the season losing all four of their opening league games, leaving Kevin Bond’s side without a point at this early stage of the campaign.

The midweek defeat to Peterborough compounded Southend’s recent woes, coming off the back of reversals by Lincoln, Blackpool and Coventry City.

Wycombe, however, have two wins and two draws from their four league games, with Tuesday’s draw away at Fleetwood helping the Chairboys maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Last Meeting

Saturday 13th April 2019

Southend United 0-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Akinfenwa 69’, 72’

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Adebayo Akinfenwa secured Wycombe Wanderers a vital three points at Roots Hall.

After a goalless first-half, Akinfenwa got on the end of a Scott Kashket cross to tap in at the far post before his looping header three minutes later secured the victory for the Chairboys.

Blues Team News

Simon Cox is hopeful of recovering from a knee problem picked up on Tuesday night in time for the trip to Adams Park. The forward struggled through the final few minutes against Peterborough, but the issue isn’t as bad as first feared.

Defender Nathan Ralph's availability is less certain after the full-back pulled up with a hamstring injury on Tuesday. There remains a glimmer of hope for him to win his race to be fit but Bond suggested he may not train on Friday which throws his chances up in the air.

That leaves the door open for Andre Blackman to make his full Blues debut, while Kevin Bond has options to replace Cox if needed with Stephen Humphrys, Theo Robinson and Charlie Kelman available.

Wycombe Dangerman

When discussing Wycombe’s dangerman you can’t ignore someone who has the nickname of “The Beast”, which is the case for the Chairboy’s frontman Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Akinfenwa is far from your stereotypical striker in terms of build, but his size and power make him a nightmare for opposing defences to deal with.

And don’t let his size fool you as ‘Bayo’ still possesses all the technical ability required to make him a threat in front of goal, as seen when he notched twice against Southend last time the teams met.

Ref Watch

Darren Drysdale will be the man in the middle at Adams Park, with the referee from Lincoln being assisted by Ollie Williams and Leigh Crowhurst, while Mike Desborough is on hand as fourth official.

Drysdale last presided over a Southend game back in December when Blues won on penalties against Luton in the Checkatrade Trophy at Kenilworth Road.

So far this season, Drysdale has officiated three matches, issuing 13 yellow cards and no reds, most recently taking charge at Blackpool for their 2-1 win over Oxford United.

Away Fans Guide

Blues fans making their way to High Wycombe will find themselves pitching up in the Panache Stand, or East Stand to you and I, which has a capacity of around 2,000.

Adams Park’s total capacity is just over 10,000 and it boasts an impressive looking south stand to the left of the away end, named the Frank Adams Stand after the Chairboys’ former captain.

Tickets

Just shy of 400 tickets have been sold so far to Blues fans for tomorrow’s clash.

Should you wish to buy on the day, you’ll be able to do so on the turnstiles at Adams Park with the club able to accept cash or card.

Allsop, Jacobson, Gape, Stewart, Pattison, Bloomfield, Kashket, Grimmer, Charles, Onyedinma, Samuel.

Yates, Wheeler, Phillips, Akinfenwa, Parker, Freeman, Mascoll.

I think after Tuesday this game was just too soon for Coxy, on the bench though. Also good to see Rob K on the bench. Hope it won't be too long before he starts. We have it all to do today. Come on you Blues stuff these chairboys where it hurts.

I may be in a minority, but I thought Humphrys looked sharper and more interested on Tuesday, we shall see.

Surely Cox is just dropped due to how he’s been playing? I doubt he’ll want excuses made for him, he’s just out of form which is a knock on effect of coming back too soon....you play a while on Adrenalin and then it catches up on you after 1/2 maybe 3 games and you can’t do it

Bet you he comes on from the bench at some point.

Well it’s the formation I predicted so I can’t moan about that. When you look at the 18 it certainly feels strong enough to compete at this level so it’s now down to Mr Bond to get the plan right and the players to deliver.

Looking at the teamsheet reads more like 5-3-2 than 4-1-4-1.

Will be interesting to see how Humphrys and Goodship partner if they are both up front.

SOUTHEND United manager Kevin Bond has made one change to his starting line-up for this afternoon's clash at Wycombe Wanderers with Stephen Humphrys returning to the team.
