Your first away game...

Mine was the Division Two game at Ipswich in September 1991. My Dad moved to Suffolk in the November of 1990 so this was an ideal opportunity for him to take me to an away game.
Anyway, i remember Paul Sansome giving away a penalty just after half time which Ipswich scored and we lost 1-0, but being just 9 years old i was pretty overwhelmed by the whole experience and really enjoyed it.
Anyone else remember their away debut...?

FA Cup 1st round, Woking at the Kingfield Sports Ground in November 1997. Everyone including me expected us to lose because we really were crap back then. Anyway we won 2-0 thanks to a peach of a free-kick from Nathan Jones in the last minute and a header soon after from Phil Gridelet of all people.

Preseason friendly at Basildon United. Cycle there from home (Billericay) , I would have been about 15.

Newport County 1977 when I was at Cardiff Uni

Living that far from Southend and having no Southend supporting mates made going away not particularly attactive, First "real" away game was Anfield, and I went there on my own as well !!

Hey mine too!
The thing I remember about that game was how loud the away support was & it really cemented my SUFC addiction, in fact away-days have probably always proved more enjoyable ever since.

I have to admit I was slightly older than you that day though!!!

That was also the infamous day of Jason Dozzell's brother stoving in the windows of the Southend fans pub near the ground, ALLEGEDLY...

I think it was at Brentford in January '88. We lost 1-0.

To be honest, i can't recall much about it. I was sitting in the home end but wearing my Southend shirt. I do remember constantly looking over at the away terrace and wishing i was in there. I also remember my Dad trying to explain to the guy behind us that the reason we were in the home end was because he lived in Ipswich and could only get home tickets.

At Aldershot and we got hammered 5 or 6 goals to 2. Must of been over 20 years ago now. Only went as my Grandad was an Aldershot fan. I was only 13 or so then.

Think mine was Col Ewe in about 83 or 84 for an LDV (equivalent) game.. lost 2-0 if i remember correctly

I think Paul Clark may have scored an OG

Been back to the cow shed about ten times since and apart from a 1-3 friendly reverse i think i've always gone home happier than that night

Col Ewe away 1990 - they went down, we went up, happy days!!

Watford, Autumn 1991, 2-1 win with Andy Sussex and Keith Dublin (og) on scoresheet.

Can't believe we signed Dublin after that.

Overriding memory of day is the mammoth trek round endless allotments to get to the away end...

Actually this was my first away win, just remembered first away game was Bournemouth, also 91, Angell scored first but they won 3-1, Luther Blissett scored for them.

Actually, that is complete rubbish it was Watford away in the 2nd round of that years FA Cup in December 1978. I remember hearing the draw for the 3rd round in my friend's dad's car and we all nearly fell out of the car on hearing Southend United or Watford vs. Liverpool. Marvellous.

Remember that well. Woeful performance, with a Clarky og as you rightly say and David Swindlehurst getting their other.

Richard Young was through one-on-one with their keeper and fell over.

Yeah the farmer boys home support are none too keen on away fans in with them.

I remember I took my ex's brother to an Ipswich v Leeds match the first year of the Premier League, 92-93 as he was a mad Leeds fan & despite being in the family enclosure we still got all manner of nasty abuse, despite him being about the age you must have been for your trip to Portman Rd.

It's almost as if you can hear their brains ticking "Ooo-aar, away supporter, ooo-aar in the home end. Does Not Compute, Does Not Compute, must abuse alien entity not from roun'ere!!!"

With my Dad it was to Stockport, Flew with the team from Southend Airport and watched us clinch promotion.

On my own was Port Vale on a hot sunny day when the air con wasnt working and the 2 coaches werent allowed to move until a police escort collected us.

Damn... Richard Young was signed as a replacement for King Richard Cadette in the summer of 87 (that Dick Bate knew a player when he saw one !!

) so, i must've seen us lose 'there' twice as i do recall being there when Young was clean through and he had a choice of shooting or taking it round the keeper, he chose the latter and let the stopper pick it off his toe.. i believe that one ended 1-2.. anyone remember differently ??

Before my time, but seeing as Dick Bate is almost unanimously agreed to be the worst Blues manager of all-time, is Richard Young the worst player we've ever had in modern-times? We've had some really awful players in the 16 years I've been watching Southend, but is he really the worst? I came across my Photographic History of SUFC book the other day & even that said he was a joke!

Mine was in 1989 at Aldershot - we thumped them 5-0 though they helped by scoring 2 own goals....the second from a certain Mr. S. Wignall with a bullet header!

This will take some beating, my first "proper" away game was August '87 and the 8-1 drubbing at Gillingham. Even our goal was an og.

west ham in the carling cup last year. As you may remember we lost 2-0

However, i do remember how good our away support was and the fact that the southend fans did not stop singing despite losing.
