I found this little gem(In colour as well). Sorry It's a defeat, but It's the only footage I can find of a Southend game around that time. The only other video is the players at Roots Hall market in 1966 that I have already put on here.
Anyway, it's the 1966/67 season in Division 4. It's our last away match that season. Southport are going for promotion and finish 2nd and we finish 6th. Southend played in that kit from 1965-67, and then kept the same shirt and shorts for the 1967/68 season, but changed the socks.
Our squad that season was this, for any old timers on here trying to recognise the players.
John Baber Winger
Tony Beanland Wing half
Tony Bentley Full back
Graham Birks Full back
Eddie Firmani Inside forward
Colin Flatt Centre forward
Bobby Haddrick Centre half
Steve Ingle Full back
Alex Lumsden Forward
Frank Matthews Full back
Eddie May Central defender
John McKinven Outside Left
Trevor Roberts Goalkeeper
Mel Slack Wing half
Malcolm Slater Winger
Andy Smillie Inside forward
Ray Smith Centre forward
Ray White Goalkeeper
Derek Woodley Winger

Some might think that squad is very short of numbers especially as Steve Ingle came (as a centre forward) after Eddie Firmani had left - so a squad of 16. Wouldn't even fill a bench these days let alone cover those who can't manage two games a week or 90 minutes in a game!!

However, 7 of the squad played over 42 games or more and Ray Smith played 39 and Derek Woodley 36. 4 of the 16 only managed 16 appearances in total.

6 defeats and 7 failures to score in the last 14 games finished us off. When Firmani went so did promotion.

What a GREAT film (Southport v us).Other than Mick,i wonder who else may have been there..Nobbler??
Nice to see Trevor Roberts in goal.
Was that Tony Bentley playing no4, YEP
Bog rolls, flat caps, rattle and dog and fans on the pitch..what more do you want from a game!!!

Roberts, Ingle, Birks, Bentley, May, Beanland, Woodley, Slack, Smith, Smillie, McKinven. - Sub would have been Flatt or Baber

That'd be 1972. We won that one!

On Easter Monday after we'd beaten Doncaster 2-1 at Roots Hall ( 15,814) on Good Friday, and drawn 0-0 at Lincoln (12,199) on the Saturday. I went to Lincoln and on to Southport and back to Southend in my little Ford Anglia - there wasn't much M6 in those days!.

Yeah I went to the Lincoln game as well - drove my 100E van there - broke down on the way back near Wickford if I recall

Ozzie, Nobbler was there, I think we went by train? (Mick can you help me out please) seem to remember coming back to London with the players, also on the train was the Millwall team?. Have just checked the programme and it mentions that this was our first visit to Haigh Avenue.

Yes, correct with all points I think. Millwall lost 5-0 at Bolton.

You're talking about this photo from page 1 of this thread I believe. No it's a normal sized pitch, but the angle the photo has been taken from makes it look square.

Stadium.jpg

Not sure that's a genuine, unaltered photograph. The width of the pitch appears almost 3 times the width of the penalty area. The corner quadrants (and the players) are disproportionately large, there are no goal areas, although the lack of penalty arc would be okay if it was in the first two years of our tenure there.

Early equivalent of Photoshop, methinks.
Yep the pitch has been badly hand drawn onto the original photo along with Southend United on the stand roof and the flag as well I think.

Wonderful highlights from 1967 'TSNB'.

Amazing to think that stuff like this still exists and is floating around somewhere.

Pure nostalgia! :thumbsup::cool:

agree,keep on searching TSNB.
Was also at those 3 games 71-71,Doni,Lincoln and Southport.
Was on Brother Grimms coaches,at Lincoln we got "bricked" twice, one in Lincoln and again in EASTWOOD!!!
Coming back from Lincoln, down the motorway, lads hanging out of the,no longer there window!!

Probably not!

Did decide to run a coach to that cup game at Bournmouth, (supermac, supermac, and all that), and on the way back a window did get a crack in it so the lads at the back helped out by smashing the whole window!

Going through a town some enterprising guys decided to say a few words which to their shock & horror led to a barrage of bottles, some full of liquid that wasn't coke, no toilets on the coach in those days, & other objects thrown at them from all angles!

I lost my deposit.

I and others have almost exhausted everything. That Southport one came up when looking for something else. I was looking for Southend v Workington. So very lucky with that one. Of course if I find anything it will go on here. There's loads of recent year one's, but I think this thread is best kept the way it is with all the old stuff.

Whilst everyone is in video search mode are there any clips you can post here please from the '72 to '84 era which will have Alan Moody in it?

I'm aware of the Liverpool home game in -79 of course but cannot recall there being anything else. The Watford game in '78 was of course on MOD but I don't think that is online?

Cheers

Above link is all about Watford winning the 4th Division title in 77/78 when we came second. The footage is of the Ross Jenkins goal for them in the 1-1 draw against us on 15th April 1978 in front of 18,947 (WHAT A DAY!! that was) and featured on MoTD.
We clinched promotion the following Friday beating Rochdale 3-1 at Roots Hall.

So many memories of that day out to Watford!!!!

was also on a coach that game that was "bricked",may have been the same one

Telford v Southend F.A.Cup 8th November 2008. I like the videos older than this, but this was such a great game, I've put it on. It's a really enjoyable watch. The commentators add to it as well. Clarky scored a good goal I thought, I still can't see the handball. Dodgy penalty decisions given, not given, and our two Frenchmen come good.

The police did a good job inside the ground that night and the new tactics worked. But outside there was trouble all over the place, with big mobs from both sides, mainly up Victoria Avenue, and outside and inside Victoria train station.
