Right you are Rob.I meant the 5/6-1 away defeat in the mid-70's when SP's did indeed score our goal. Was standing with you and Mule,IIRC.

Btw Ray I know Paul Clark played a few games after that Palace defeat-what I meant was it was obvious that his days were numbered after that.

That game was Boxing Day 1983. We signed Steve Phillips the season before.

Yes i was on that coach too. Called off due to the thick sea fog that had rolled into cleethorpes just before kick off. Wouldn't have been so bad but we could see it was getting foggy about an hour away from the ground. Coach driver phoned to see if match wss still on and grimsby said yes "it's clear as a bell here" ....so on we went. Seem to remember the supporters coach stopping in the pub for a few hours on the way home on the A1.

If I remember rightly a few of the coach were trying to drum up support to go to another game but apparently this wasn't allowed for safety reasons - I think it was Villa?

4-0 at Darlo. In the new ground? I think Tilly said the team had a virus but I think we then went on to get promotion - but I could (easily) be wrong. Poor game but weather was okay I think.

I wasn't at the game, but I remember the some of the players saying they felt knackered before the game even kicked off as we had played col utd in the cup on the Wednesday and that game had gone to extra time and then pens (which we won)

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the away game at Stevenage last season - 1-0 down at half-time was quickly turned into a 2-1 lead in front of the away end .............. and then everything went down from there. Cold weather, game thrown away, terrible substitutions and rubbish pitch.

Two seasons ago, away at Morecombe, 1 nil up and cruising. Then 2nd half we just imploded with a comedy mix up goal allowing Elison (again!) to score. Lost 2-1.
(But then that same mid week we came back from 2 nil down to draw at Scunny with goals from JW and that stunner from Mr Egan.)

Think it was "the other one" (who drove us there) and Wors, actually. And yes, it was indeed Boxing Day '83. Remember that Donut had a 'mare. Was it Terry Cochrane who carved us up that day? Think I'll have to look it up.

I am going for an off the wall one here.
The date 29th April 1989
Location Feethams
Teams Darlington vs Colchester
Div 4
Three games to go saw the following prop up the Fourth Division
Hartlepool 48pts
Colchester 41pts
Darlington 39pts

A minibus of hardy regulars decided to cheer Darlington on to victory to aid Colchester's fall into non league.

About 8 of us boosted the 7,126 crowd and looked forward to seeing Col Ewe beaten to a pulp.
We put our flags in the windows of the minibus and gave generous abuse to the scores of Colchester coaches we passed.
Much to our horror the police saw we were southerners and escorted us and parked us next to the previously abused coaches. Quickly taking the flags down we filed into the ground full of hope.

The rotten gits won 2-1 thus basically saving themselves from relegation and we made our way to the minibus deflated and getting abuse from the Col Ewe half beasts. It was a long miserable journey home.

Brentford in the FA Cup replay a few years back. Thank Christ the keeper was good or it'd be ten nil instead of two or whatever it was. First match on my own, the commotion at the home game made the bus ride interesting, even if it was only three stops, and it was bloody freezing to boot.

I did like the guy yelling to bring back the jazz on the way out though.

Funnily enough, I really enjoyed this one. Certainly never felt more of a buzz following a defeat than I did that day. How many times do you see an away player get man of the match?

Strangely my most pointless away trip was a game we won 3-1 I think it was. Away to Bournemouth before days of M25 and traffic was pretty much nose to tail through Redhill , Reigate and Dorking etc. so arrived at game just as ref was blowing for half time.

We were 3 - 0 up but the only goal I saw was one for the cherries.

Then I broke down on the way home. I seem to recall Alan Foggon was in the team but my memory often lets me down.

Still a good 3 points on the day.

This.

Corr's equaliser was brilliant, not necessarily in terms of quality but the unexpected joy at defying justice by equalising in a game we were never in.

A great cup tie. So what if it didn't last and we lost; it made you feel alive. Not many games (the final minute of Wembley aside) have done that in recent years.

Im sure we were ravaged by injuries as well, and had around 6 defenders playing.

Clohessy, Barker, Cresswell, Phillips, Prosser and Straker all started, think this was before the days of Straker as a wing as well.

3rd Sept 1977 Bournemouth 0 Southend 3 according to the SUFC history book it was 2-0 at half time. Looks like the goal in the 2nd half was an Alan Moody penalty. Alan Foggon did play.

Yeah, we had no midfielders and Mark Phillips had to play in midfield. It wasn't a success.

I think it might have also been the first time Straker was moved to the wing.
