Agreed. I thought it was an auto 3 game for a red, like Will and Lenny last season, so I think 3 is right.

A 1 game ban is normally for a second yellow.

A 3 game ban for a red is for violent conduct or serious foul play. A red card for handball, unsporting behaviour, being the last man and showing dissent to the ref is a 1 game ban. He may have been sent off for 2 yellows and not a straight red

I'm surprised that anyone is surprised. We dodged a bullet against both Wimbledon and Blackpool. 2 crap goals conceded against Fleetwood. That is 17 goals conceded in 6 away games. Ferdinand looks far worse than Barrett supposedly was at this stage last season.
Sending off may be a blessing in disguise. Expect to see Turner and White at the back next Saturday, and don't expect to see Ferdinand again.
